At the reception, Provincial Party Secretary Tran Hong Minh expressed his joy and excitement to welcome the UNESCO delegation to attend the 8th APGN Conference. The delegation's visit and work is of great significance to Cao Bang province in particular, strengthening solidarity and friendship, while contributing to deepening the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and UNESCO in general.
He shared: Cao Bang Province is the second locality in Vietnam to receive the title of Global Geopark recognized by the UNESCO Council in April 2018. Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark is a rare land where visitors can learn about the Earth's history of over 500 million years. The values of geology, biodiversity, history and natural landscape, and intangible cultural heritage of Non Nuoc Cao Bang Global Geopark have created a global Geopark with unique and distinct values compared to other global Geoparks.
During the period of building and developing the Geopark from 2015 to 2024, the provincial tourism industry has achieved quite rapid growth and a leap forward from the implementation of the UNESCO Global Geopark model. With the achieved results, Cao Bang province is certain to continue to develop the Non Nuoc Cao Bang Global Geopark according to UNESCO criteria; at the same time, promote propaganda and education activities about Geoparks for the community and in schools; develop a network of Geopark partners committed to sharing social and environmental responsibilities in business; preserve heritage associated with tourism development; support vulnerable groups in the community to ensure that all people in the community benefit from the achievements of socio-economic development. Through the working trip of Ms. Lidia Brito and the entire delegation within the framework of the 8th APGN Conference, Cao Bang hopes that UNESCO will continue to support and assist Vietnam in general and Cao Bang in particular in preserving and promoting the value of global geoparks to serve the sustainable socio-economic development of the locality.
Ms. Lidia Brito, Assistant Director General of UNESCO for Natural Sciences, thanked the Secretary of Cao Bang Provincial Party Committee for welcoming the delegation with warm and hospitable feelings; at the same time, shared the difficulties and losses that Vietnam in general, including Cao Bang province, is facing and overcoming the consequences of floods. She affirmed her desire to further strengthen the cooperation between UNESCO and Vietnam and recognized geoparks, in which Cao Bang is a model of a global geopark that has developed very strongly in using UNESCO's experience to contribute to the socio-economic development of the locality as well as improving the lives of the people.
On this occasion, Ms. Lidia Brito congratulated Vietnam and the Vietnam Geopark network for having a new member when Lang Son was recognized as a global geopark by the UNESCO Council on September 11. Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark is a good model and example for Lang Son Geopark to learn from to build and promote the brand and values of a global geopark.
She emphasized that through the focal point of the UNESCO Office in Vietnam, UNESCO has many programs such as "Human Biosphere Science", with specialized departments on risk management and disaster mitigation. In the current context, many extreme weather patterns, for Cao Bang, a mountainous area with many risks, such as landslides, can be dangerous to people and affect socio-economic development. Therefore, UNESCO proposed to increase support in promoting and strengthening climate change adaptation activities in the face of new challenges and risks, and mitigating natural disaster risks. At the same time, it proposed to increase educational support and capacity building for youth - a young force with great potential to contribute more to promoting the development of global geoparks. Cao Bang has the strength to develop an agricultural economy. It is necessary to enhance the knowledge of the youth force, train young human resources to participate in common tasks to adapt in the context of the new era, aiming to help build a province with sustainable development.
Speaking at the reception, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ha Kim Ngoc highly appreciated Cao Bang province for its careful preparation for the 8th APGN Conference despite difficult conditions. On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO would like to share the loss of life and property that Cao Bang is suffering due to the severe consequences of natural disasters and floods. Expressed special thanks to Ms. Lidia Brito for attending the Conference. Thereby, demonstrating UNESCO's commitment to solidarity and support for Vietnam in protecting and promoting the value of global geoparks in general, including Cao Bang. Cao Bang Geopark is a model of conservation and preservation of natural values in parallel with serving socio-economic development.
He expressed his gratitude to UNESCO for supporting Lang Son to be recognized as a global geopark, which is a great joy for Vietnam; acknowledged and appreciated the UNESCO Vietnam Office in Hanoi for helping to develop strategies to preserve global geoparks and biosphere reserves in the current conditions of global climate change.
Provincial Party Secretary Tran Hong Minh presented souvenirs to the working delegation of UNESCO Assistant Director General for Natural Sciences.
The 8th APGN Conference is a great festival not only for the Geopark Network in Vietnam but also for countries in the region and internationally. Through the organization of the 8th APGN Conference, it is also to affirm the role of an active and responsible member and make substantial contributions to the common issues of UNESCO, and at the same time, it is an opportunity to share and exchange experiences to continuously improve the work of building, operating and promoting the role of global Geoparks associated with sustainable development goals.
