Blockchain brings a breath of fresh air to the Vietnamese gaming market.

Opening the final round of the Solana Super Game Jam 2024 programming competition organized by Superteam on December 16th, Mr. Anh Tran, Superteam's representative for Southeast Asia, reviewed the overall picture of the global game market and the position of the Vietnamese game industry on the international map.

Mr. Anh Tran stated that the global gaming market in 2023 witnessed an unprecedented boom with nearly 3.2 billion gamers. Mobile games are contributing significantly, with estimated revenue of approximately $92 billion. Simple, easy-to-play games like hyper-casual titles continue to attract players, while game streaming platforms such as Google Stadia and xCloud are ushering in a new era for mobile gaming.

The position of Vietnamese games

Amidst the booming growth of the gaming industry, Vietnam is also participating. Data from Bloomberg shows that Vietnam is among the top 5 mobile game producing countries in the world, based on downloads in the first half of 2023.

Meanwhile, Google's statistics once showed that one in ten top games was produced in Vietnam. Vietnamese games have 4.2 billion downloads globally, a growth rate 2.5 times higher than the world average.

According to Mr. Anh Tran, the Vietnamese gaming industry has achieved significant success over the years. However, to compete in the international market, studios need to constantly innovate and seek more groundbreaking technologies. Blockchain and Web3, with their outstanding advantages in transparency, security, and decentralization, will be the new wave for the Vietnamese gaming industry.

A leap forward from traditional games.

According to Thai Thanh Liem, founder and CEO of Topebox, blockchain games in Vietnam started in mid-2021 and have since formed a certain community of players and developers.

With over 18 years of experience in mobile game publishing, Mr. Liem believes that the trend of Vietnamese game developers shifting towards blockchain technology is quite clear and logical.

"The partial shift of game developers is appropriate, helping Vietnam catch up with the world's development in the blockchain field. Compared to the highly competitive traditional game market, blockchain is bringing a breath of fresh air to Vietnamese games. Developers have more playing fields and are supported by many strong ecosystems," Mr. Liem assessed.

Meanwhile, representatives from Superteam Southeast Asia noted that the quality of Vietnamese participants in game hackathons consistently stands out, highlighting their creativity, unique gameplay ideas, eye-catching graphics, and rapid application of emerging technologies such as AI (artificial intelligence) and blockchain.

New potential for Vietnamese games

Looking back at Super Game Jam 2024, Mr. Anh Tran believes that one of Vietnam's biggest advantages is its large and vibrant gaming community, creating a potential domestic market for new products. "Vietnam also possesses a talented workforce of programmers ready to meet the human resource needs of the blockchain gaming industry, at a competitive cost compared to other countries," Mr. Anh Tran stated.

Meanwhile, the CEO of Topebox pointed out that a major advantage of Vietnamese games is the open and cooperative spirit of domestic companies. They are always active in community activities to share knowledge and relationships, increasing opportunities for cooperation and mutual support.

"Companies like NE, Ronin, A8, and Solana are very active in finding and supporting projects from Vietnamese teams," Mr. Liem commented.

Experts agree that the position of blockchain games in Vietnam has changed significantly this year. Compared to 2021, the market has witnessed many large-scale projects with more serious and long-term investments. Along with this, the more open approach of regulatory bodies towards the gaming industry, the establishment of specialized gaming departments at several universities, and the new national blockchain strategy issued by the government will be major drivers, boosting the Vietnamese gaming industry, especially blockchain games, which are expected to boom in the near future.

According to Mr. Anh Tran, to develop the gaming market sustainably, close cooperation is needed between developers, investors, government agencies, and the gaming community. At the same time, building a robust blockchain ecosystem is also a crucial factor.

"Hackathon competitions are becoming a 'talent training ground' for young people to hone their skills, connect with the community, and seek international collaboration opportunities. Many unique game ideas are also supported and successfully commercialized. This contributes to enriching the market and affirming Vietnam's position on the international gaming map," a representative from Superteam Southeast Asia commented.
