According to Deputy Minister Bui Hoang Phuong, nowadays, students are constantly exposed to the internet, email, and social media, so the act of them taking the time to sit down and write a letter, expressing their thoughts in neat handwriting on paper, is a very meaningful act.
Moreover, these letters have a profound impact on students and young generations, prompting them to reflect on pressing international issues, to voice their opinions, and to offer solutions to these problems.
According to Deputy Minister Bui Hoang Phuong, each year, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) usually selects a prominent issue, one that is global and deeply humane, to be the theme of the competition. The theme for the 54th UPU International Letter Writing Competition in 2025 is: “Imagine you are the ocean. Write a letter to someone explaining why and how they should take good care of and protect you.”
Announcing the rules and technical guidelines for writing a letter that meets the requirements, journalist Do Thi Thanh Binh, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Youth Pioneer and Children's Newspaper, informed: The participants are Vietnamese students aged 9 to 15 (as of the time of submitting the letter to the competition).
The submitted letter must be the creative work of an individual student, written in prose on the competition theme (not previously published in newspapers or books), and no longer than 800 words. Letters written in a foreign language must be accompanied by a Vietnamese translation. The judging panel will evaluate based on the Vietnamese translation. The submitted letter must be clear, neat, and handwritten on one side of the paper...
