"I still want to maintain my top form, play in big tournaments, and I feel I have the ability to do that," midfielder Bruno Fernandes told the media ahead of Portugal's Nations League semi-final against Germany, speaking about his decision to reject a move to Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal.

The Man Utd captain confirmed that he turned down an attractive offer worth £700,000/week to continue to contribute to the Old Trafford team after having a frank discussion with his family as well as coach Ruben Amorim.

"It was an opportunity. The Al Hilal chairman called me and asked if I wanted to go there. They were waiting for me. I spoke to coach Amorim. He advised me not to go. Man Utd did not want to sell me. They did not need the money. If I wanted to leave, they would have allowed it," Bruno Fernandes shared.

Fernandes also admitted that moving to Saudi Arabia would be easy, even convenient, for his family members.

"I have my friend Joao Cancelo playing there, my children also play with him in the national team, we have a great friendship. But I want to maintain my top form, play in the big tournaments," Fernandes added.

The Portuguese midfielder's decision made many football experts feel admiration, because if including salary and bonus, Bruno Fernandes could receive up to 200 million pounds in 3 years playing for the Saudi Arabian club.

"Money is a big issue in football," former Portugal midfielder Petit told TalkSport's White and Jordan show .

"Players, especially this generation, I'm not going to say that wasn't true in the past, but I think it's becoming more and more important. Money is becoming more important than winning trophies and having a great career.

And I have to say thank you very much, Bruno, for what you did, because you could have left Man Utd and got a lot of money. The offer on the table was fantastic and he turned it down.

"For me, that means his commitment to the club, his love for Man Utd, his passion for the Premier League. He wants to play at the highest level and I think that's remarkable. Honestly, I don't know how many players would do that," Petit said.

Despite Man Utd having a poor season finishing 15th in the Premier League, Bruno Fernandes has still shown great form, scoring 19 goals and providing 19 assists in all competitions.

The Portuguese midfielder has made 290 appearances in six seasons for Man Utd and needs just two more goals to reach the 100-goal mark.
