Coutinho could move to Mexico to play. |
According to South American media, Pumas UNAM has submitted an offer to sign Coutinho, including clauses for bonuses based on the number of goals scored and a share of shirt sales revenue. However, the Mexican team has only given the former Liverpool star a mere four days to make a decision.
If he agrees, Coutinho will have the opportunity to return to the pitch and play in Liga MX, alongside Keylor Navas, the goalkeeper who won the UEFA Champions League three times with Real Madrid.
In early March, Fichajes reported that three La Liga teams – Girona, Rayo Vallecano, and Elche – were also interested in Coutinho. However, the midfielder was not in a hurry to make a decision.
At 33, Coutinho was once one of the world's leading attacking midfielders. His peak at Liverpool saw him score 54 goals in 201 games, before moving to Barcelona in 2018 for a staggering £142 million, the second most expensive transfer in the world at the time. However, he failed to live up to expectations and subsequently played for Bayern Munich, Aston Villa, and Al-Duhail.
After returning to Brazil to play for Vasco da Gama, Coutinho continued to disappoint and left the team under rather unfavorable circumstances. He admitted to having psychological problems and needing time to rest.
"I'm completely exhausted mentally. It's time to close this chapter," the Brazilian player shared.
In that context, the offer from Pumas could be an opportunity for Coutinho to revive his career, although his future remains a big question mark.
