Luca Zidane has a chance to attend the 2026 World Cup. |
Two weeks ago, Luca submitted a request to FIFA to change federation from France to Algeria and was approved. Shortly after, coach Vladimir Petkovic included him in the list of 26 Algerian players preparing for two 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Somalia and Uganda next week.
Algeria are currently top of Group G of the African qualifying round, four points ahead of second-placed Uganda. They only need to win one of their next two matches to secure a place at the 2026 World Cup.
That means Luca has the chance to appear at a World Cup for the first time – something he will find difficult to achieve if he continues to wait for his chance in the French team.
Born in France, Luca represented Les Bleus youth teams but was never called up to the senior team. Due to his Algerian heritage on his grandfather's side, he is eligible to play for the North African national team.
The goalkeeper, born in 1998, grew up in the Real Madrid academy and debuted in the first team in 2017 under the guidance of his father. Luca was a member of the Real squad that won the Champions League that season, although he mainly played a reserve role.
After leaving the Bernabeu in 2020, Luca played for Racing Santander, Rayo Vallecano and is currently playing for Granada in the Spanish Second Division (Segunda Division).
