Professor, Doctor, and Physician Van Tan was born in 1938 in Quang Tri . He is honored as the best arterial surgeon in Vietnam, the second best liver surgeon in the country, and the first Vietnamese doctor to perform thoracic sympathectomy and abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery.
He graduated as a medical doctor in 1964 and has been working at Binh Dan Hospital (HCMC) since 1972. He has been the main surgeon in more than 30,000 surgical cases, mostly major surgeries.
The famous surgery of Professor Van Tan is Nguyen Duc and his younger brother in the conjoined twins Viet-Duc born in Kon Tum . The two twins were conjoined at the abdomen, pelvis, genitals, anus, had two legs and one leg was amputated. The legendary surgery to separate the two brothers took place on October 4, 1988, becoming a milestone in the history of Vietnamese medicine and was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. The separation surgery gathered the best team of professors and doctors in Vietnam at that time and was a great success after 15 hours of intense work with 3 main surgeons: doctors Tran Dong A, Tran Thanh Trai and Van Tan.

Professor Van Tan's viewpoint has remained unchanged since graduating in 1964: Be there whenever the patient needs him, regardless of whether it is late at night, on holidays, Tet or on weekends. Every day, he is always at Binh Dan Hospital at 5am, visiting the patients first. From the severe to the mild cases, then starting the morning professional meeting with the board of directors and doctors at 7:15am. For many years, the professor has never been late for a minute.
At Binh Dan Hospital, Professor Van Tan used to be the Deputy Director of the hospital, but for him, the greatest joy is examining, treating, and performing surgery on patients every day. That is why, even though he has reached retirement age, he continues to stay at the hospital to do professional work. He is a professional advisor of Binh Dan Hospital and a lecturer at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine and Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
Along with his illustrious medical career and tens of thousands of major surgeries, Professor Van Tan is also an exemplary teacher with nearly 60 years of teaching experience. Many generations of medical students studying at the Center for Training and Development of Medical Staff (now Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine) will surely never forget the image of the teacher wearing a special blouse, gentle but extremely strict. As always, the first lesson that Professor Van Tan taught his students was a lesson in ethics, focusing on the patient. For him, a doctor, in addition to expertise, must put medical ethics first.
Although he is over 90 years old, Professor, Doctor, Doctor Van Tan is still tirelessly teaching medical knowledge to students as well as diagnosing and saving people. During the peak of the social distancing period due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he still tirelessly shared his professional knowledge with students everywhere on digital platforms. He is a shining example of medical ethics that many generations of doctors admire and follow.
Throughout his life, if there was any choice that Professor Van Tan never regretted, never got bored with, it was choosing the medical profession. A profession that, through many changes of the times and technological advances, still captivated him with his passion for research and concern for caring for patients, for understanding and for "passing on" his passion to future generations of doctors.
