Crocodile and cheetah fight over antelope carcass. Video : Latest Sightings
Bob and Rosa Swart, two tourists, witnessed a chase between a crocodile and a cheetah along the dry Shingwedzi River in Kruger National Park, Latest Sightings reported on May 2. They had previously encountered three cheetahs while driving. Despite the scorching sun, the cheetahs were extremely alert and focused on something. The Swarts waited for more than an hour until a herd of waterbucks, including several calves, approached.
Suddenly, one of the cheetahs sneaked into the bushes, and the other two began chasing the antelope. Finally, they caught one of the herd. The commotion attracted crocodiles that were sunning themselves at the edge of the pond. One by one, the crocodiles crept closer. The cheetahs struggled to stay afloat and hissed at their enemies.
However, the large group of crocodiles frightened the cheetahs, causing them to abandon their prey and flee. In total, 12 crocodiles appeared. However, only the largest crocodile remained to eat the antelope carcass, surrounded by vultures and many other scavenging birds.
Cheetahs are known for their speed and agility, making them successful hunters. They can sprint at speeds of 120 km/h to catch prey quickly. Cheetahs rely on their eyesight to spot prey from a distance and use their speed to ambush them.
Crocodiles are not frequent scavengers. They usually hunt their own prey rather than preying on recently killed animals. Crocodiles eat almost anything they can catch, including fish, birds, and mammals.
