On Facebook, a man shared a photo of a familiar animal in an unexpected location, along with a video of it swimming ashore. "First time I've seen an alligator on Dauphin Island. Anyone heading west beware," Matt Harvill wrote.
The video left some beachgoers frightened. Others were calmer, saying it wouldn't affect their beach trip.
“I would probably still go in the water,” said Noah Knight. “There aren’t alligators everywhere in the area, but there probably are.”
Experts say the best thing to do if you encounter an alligator is to take precautions, and not feed them.

Reactions to Harvill's post ranged from fear to disbelief. "Looks like he's just catching some air," "I guess he's not scared of sharks," "I hope he doesn't have to go to church today."
This sighting is unusual because crocodiles are known to be freshwater creatures. They also typically live in swampy areas, not beaches.
Still, Dauphin Island Marine Laboratory staff have reported seeing the animal in the area. " Alligators are not uncommon on Dauphin Island, although they can't tolerate very salty water," said a lab worker.
"So if there is one hanging out on the beach, it could have wandered over from freshwater ponds or gotten lost after a rainstorm," he added.
