(CLO) G20 diplomats have faced many obstacles in reaching consensus on key issues such as climate change finance, imposing taxes on the super-rich and handling global conflicts.
The talks come ahead of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro on November 18 and 19. A massive demonstration in support of Palestinians and against Israel's war in Gaza has taken place in Brazil.

The G20 summit coincides with the second week of the United Nations COP29 climate conference in Baku, where negotiators are seeking agreement on a new funding target to help countries tackle climate change.
However, major disagreements remain: developed countries are asking some of the richer developing countries to contribute financially, while developing countries argue that this responsibility lies with the world's richest countries.
These obstacles are further complicated by the return of US President-elect Donald Trump, who has pledged to withdraw the US from the Paris Agreement on climate once again.
Mention of the war in Ukraine has become a sensitive issue for the G20 since 2022. The situation has been further strained by the outbreak of war in Gaza, deepening geopolitical divisions within the group.
Officials leading the Rio talks have tried to avoid discussing the wars over the past year. But negotiators are now expected to include a general paragraph based on the UN principles for peace in the joint statement, along with separate paragraphs addressing Ukraine and Palestine.
One of the key proposals at the summit, involving a tax on the super-rich, met with unexpected opposition from Argentina, a proposal originally proposed by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the G20 host.
Argentina, under the leadership of its new right-wing President Javier Milei, has changed its stance after a visit to Mar-a-Lago, President-elect Trump’s Florida resort. Mr Milei became the first foreign leader to meet Mr Trump after his US election victory.
The impasse in these talks highlights the growing challenges of reaching international consensus on global issues such as climate change, inequality and conflict.
Observers expect that the results of this G20 Summit could impact the agreements at COP29 as well as shape the future of international cooperation in the coming time.
