Automakers comment on compatibility with E10 gasoline.

(Chinhphu.vn) - According to many car manufacturers, most car models are compatible and do not require technical modifications when using E10 gasoline. However, for very old car models, it is necessary to consult the owner's manual to check compatibility with E10 gasoline.

According to many car manufacturers, most car models are compatible and do not require any technical modifications when using E10 gasoline.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade recently issued a document requesting automobile and motorcycle manufacturers to review and publish their compatibility levels with E10 gasoline and prepare technical support plans for consumers.

According to representatives of the Vietnam Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (VAMM), with the motorcycle models manufactured and distributed officially in recent years, manufacturers have conducted research, testing, and calculations to ensure compatibility with ethanol-blended fuels at appropriate ratios, such as E5 or E10.

VAMM stated that, in order to maximize the effectiveness of using E10 bioethanol fuel, consumers need to pay attention to specific recommendations for each vehicle model currently on the market.

Specifically, for vehicles using electronic fuel injection (FI) technology, manufacturers assert that the vehicle's engineering design is fully compatible with E10 gasoline. However, due to the strong detergent properties of this fuel, long-standing deposits in the fuel system can become loose, easily leading to the risk of clogging the fuel filter or injectors. Therefore, VAMM recommends that if the vehicle experiences difficulty starting or reduced power, owners should take their vehicles to authorized service centers for timely assistance from technicians.

Meanwhile, for vehicles using carburetors, especially older models, recommendations will vary significantly depending on the specific design of each manufacturer. Users are advised to proactively contact authorized dealers or official customer service channels for specific advice.

For large-displacement motorcycles or specialized imported vehicles, riders must strictly adhere to the fuel instructions in the manufacturer's owner's manual to ensure the vehicle always operates in optimal condition.

Technically, ethanol has different properties than traditional mineral gasoline, which can create some minor differences in driving feel. However, at the E10 blending ratio, these changes are generally not significant under normal operating conditions.

In 2024, VAMM collaborated with Hanoi University of Science and Technology to conduct research evaluating the impact of E10 gasoline on several motorcycle models currently in circulation. The results showed that using E10 gasoline did not affect the starting and acceleration capabilities of the vehicles under normal operating conditions.

At the same time, E10 fuel has also shown a significant reduction in the content of harmful components in exhaust gases such as CO and HC.

Information from car manufacturers.

On its official website, Mitsubishi Vietnam (MMV) states that all vehicles equipped with electronic fuel injection (MPI/EFI) engines distributed in Vietnam, manufactured from 1997 to the present, are compatible with E10 gasoline. MMV recommends that in cases where vehicles are used infrequently for extended periods, fuel should be stored in the tank to prevent water separation.

Similarly, Suzuki asserts that all its cars and motorcycles currently sold in Vietnam are compatible with E10 bioethanol and require no technical modifications. For motorcycles, there are currently two manual transmission models: the Satria F150 and the V-Strom 250SX, while in the passenger car segment there is the Jimny along with a range of hybrid vehicles including the Fronx, Swift, and XL7 Hybrid.

For discontinued models, Suzuki recommends that customers refer to the vehicle's owner's manual to check compatibility with E10 gasoline.

Yamaha Vietnam also stated that all motorcycles equipped with electronic fuel injection (FI) systems are compatible with E10 bioethanol and do not require any technical modifications. To determine if the Yamaha model being used is an FI system model, customers can check the FI symbol on the vehicle's decal or instrument cluster.

Hyundai Thanh Cong Vietnam, Honda, and Toyota Vietnam also confirmed that the vehicle models are compatible and do not require any technical changes.

According to Mr. Dao Duy Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of Innovation, Green Transformation and Industrial Promotion (Ministry of Industry and Trade), the orientation towards using biofuels has been established by the Government for some time. Decision No. 53/2012/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on the issuance of the roadmap for applying the blending ratio of biofuels with traditional fuels stipulated the transition roadmap, in which the goal was to use E5 gasoline nationwide by the end of 2015 and to replace it with E10 gasoline from the end of 2017.

However, to date, Vietnam has only widely implemented E5 gasoline, while E10 gasoline has not yet been widely adopted. In order to realize the goals of environmental protection, green growth, and sustainable development as directed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, relevant authorities are continuing to study the roadmap for the adoption of E10 gasoline.

Accordingly, since the end of 2024, the Ministry has been conducting surveys, collecting information, data, and international experience on the use of biofuels to serve the development of Circular 50/2025. This process has been implemented over a long period with many consultation activities, working with domestic and foreign partners, as well as organizing specialized workshops to ensure a scientific and practical basis before proposing policies.

International experience shows that E10 gasoline has been widely used in many countries. The United States and Brazil have been using this fuel since the 1980s. In Europe, E10 has also been adopted for about two decades. Meanwhile, China has only recently promoted the use of E10. Some countries with similar climatic conditions to Vietnam, such as Thailand and the Philippines, not only use E10 but also deploy E15, and even E20 in some localities.
