Highlights of the week

This past week, many notable events in the fields of politics, culture, and social life took place both domestically and within the city, attracting the attention of the community.

Domestically, General Secretary and President To Lam chaired a working session of the Standing Committee of the Steering Committee on Science and Technology Development, Innovation and Digital Transformation (May 25) on basic scientific research, emphasizing: This is a strategic issue directly related to Vietnam's development model, self-reliance, and national position in the 21st century. The urgent requirement now is to clearly define the goals for the development of basic scientific research in the new phase, ensuring that immediate bottlenecks are addressed while simultaneously building a long-term knowledge foundation for rapid and sustainable national development.

On the morning of May 28th, the Standing Committee of the National Assembly held a National People's Council Conference to implement the direction and tasks for the 2026-2031 term. A notable point from the conference was the essential requirement to accelerate digital transformation and the application of artificial intelligence in the activities of the People's Councils. Building an interconnected data system, digitizing session documents, receiving voter feedback on digital platforms, and applying artificial intelligence in policy analysis will help the People's Councils operate faster, more transparently, and closer to the people.

In the city, a notable event was on May 26th, when Prime Minister Le Minh Hung worked with the Standing Committee of the Can Tho City Party Committee. The Prime Minister requested that Can Tho City thoroughly and effectively implement the resolutions of the Central Committee, especially the Resolution of the 14th National Congress of the Party; study ways to change mindsets, innovate methods, and create development in the new phase; research and propose to the Central Committee the implementation of special, breakthrough mechanisms to promote the comprehensive development of the city; regarding the operation of the two-tiered local government apparatus, the Prime Minister requested improved efficiency in public service delivery, particularly the arrangement, placement, training, and development of commune-level officials.

On May 30th, the Can Tho City Party Committee held a review meeting on one year of implementing the overall organizational model of the city's political system and the two-tiered local government model. City Party Secretary Le Quang Tung directed units and localities to continue improving the effectiveness of the two-tiered local government. This includes promoting decentralization, delegation of power, and allocation of resources to the commune level, coupled with effective inspection and supervision.

On May 31st, the Executive Board of the Vietnam Buddhist Association of Can Tho City solemnly organized the Great Buddha's Birthday Celebration, Buddhist Calendar 2570. At the ceremony, Venerable Buddhist dignitaries and representatives of the city's leadership offered prayers for Buddha's birthday and released balloons to pray for peace.
