Hidden culprits causing Google Drive to run out of storage space.

Few users know that Google's 15 GB of free storage is being silently used by 'digital junk'.

Most Google Drive users have received notifications that they can no longer receive emails or save photos because their storage is nearly full. Although the 15 GB of free storage from Google may seem like a lot, it's shared space for Gmail, Drive, and Photos, causing the storage to quickly run out after only a short period of use.

However, before you reach for the monthly Google One subscription fee, check out those hidden areas that are consuming data you may have overlooked.

Clean up junk data in your Gmail inbox.

The biggest mistake users make is cleaning up Drive while forgetting about Gmail. The Spam and Promotions folders accumulate thousands of junk emails over the years. Even if you never read them, they still take up space in your 15GB of storage. Just a few minutes of selecting "Permanently delete" all emails in these folders will show you a surprising change in available storage.

'Purge' large files

Don't waste time picking up individual files that are only a few kilobytes in size. On Google Drive on your computer, click on the Storage option in the left-hand menu. The system will automatically list the files from largest to smallest by size. Often, deleting just 2-3 old video files or large backups will free up as much space as thousands of text files combined. Importantly, don't forget to empty your Recycle Bin, because if the deleted data remains there, Google will still count it towards your storage.

Find and delete large files on Google Drive.

Take a closer look at the photo and video archive.

Google Photos is the biggest space-consuming area. Short, hastily recorded clips or blurry photos from years ago are consuming all your resources. Start by deleting large videos first, then screenshots and duplicate photos.

Note that iPhone users should be careful when deleting photos on Google Photos if syncing is enabled, as it may also delete the original photos on their phone.

Share some of your Google Drive data with your computer's storage.

Not all data needs to be in the cloud. For important but rarely used documents, download them to an external hard drive or your computer's storage, then delete the original copies from Drive. This is a great way to keep your data while preventing it from using up your free 15GB storage limit.

Take advantage of Google's memory management features.

If you're still wondering where your storage is going, head over to one.google.com/storage . This centralized management page shows exactly every MB used for Drive, Gmail, or Photos. Google even tags large files and inactive items so users can deal with them more quickly.

In general, cleaning up your Google storage is like cleaning your house. Just make it a habit to check every few months, and you won't have to worry about that "storage full" notification again.
