How to eat breakfast to control blood sugar throughout the day

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên07/06/2023

People with diabetes need to have a balanced, healthy diet and exercise a lot. Now, scientists have discovered that eating certain foods for breakfast can help control blood sugar levels throughout the day, according to Express (UK).

The study, led by researchers at the University of British Columbia in Canada, included 121 participants who were followed for 12 weeks.

Participants were divided into two groups.

One group ate a low-carb breakfast — with about 8 grams of carbs, 25 grams of protein, and 37 grams of fat.

The other group ate a high-carb diet — about 56 grams of carbs, 20 grams of protein, and 15 grams of fat.

Breakfast for both groups had a total of 450 calories.

Participants wore continuous blood glucose monitors throughout the study and had blood tests before and after the trial. Participants' weight and waist circumference were also measured at the beginning and end of the trial.

The results showed that the group that ate less starch in the morning had lower blood sugar levels and some people were even able to reduce the amount of hypoglycemic medication, according to Express .

According to research, a low-carb, high-protein, high-fat breakfast can be very good for people with diabetes.

Just Adjust Your Breakfast to Control Blood Sugar

What is a low carb, high protein breakfast?

A low-carb, high-protein breakfast includes foods like eggs, lean meat, fatty fish, shrimp, beans, tofu or soy milk, unsweetened milk, unsweetened yogurt or cheese, a handful of nuts, avocado, and non-starchy vegetables.

Notably, research also shows that simply adjusting breakfast is enough to control blood sugar levels throughout the day, according to Express .

A concern for people with diabetes is a rapid rise in blood sugar after a meal. Our research shows that a low-carb meal first thing in the morning can help control blood sugar levels throughout the day, explains Dr. Barbara Oliveira, a researcher at the University of British Columbia.

Eating fewer carbs for breakfast not only helps diabetics process sugar better throughout the day, but it also has incredible benefits for patients with high blood sugar levels in the morning, says Dr. Oliveira.

Making small adjustments to your carb intake at breakfast is much easier to do than having to stick to it at all meals, but you can still reap significant benefits, Oliveira notes.
