When the air is cold, dry, and the humidity is low, the oil glands become less active, making hair and scalp prone to dryness and hair loss. Is there a way to wash your hair to reduce hair loss?
1. Washing your hair incorrectly is a cause of excessive hair loss.
Common mistakes when washing hair that lead to hair loss and dryness should be avoided:
- Washing your hair too often: Many people have a habit of washing their hair daily. However, washing your hair too often can strip away its natural oils. These oils play a crucial role in nourishing and protecting the hair; when lost, hair becomes dry, brittle, loses its natural shine, and is prone to breakage.
- Washing your hair with hot water: In cold weather, we tend to use hot water for showering and washing our hair, but hot water dries out the scalp, leading to dandruff and loss of natural moisture, affecting the healthy shine of the hair.
- Not massaging the scalp: In cold weather, not only is there a need for hot water, but there's also a tendency to scratch vigorously, and shampooing takes longer. Washing your hair this way and skipping the massage step is not beneficial for your scalp and hair. Massage stimulates blood circulation and cleanses the scalp more effectively. Skipping this step will hinder hair nourishment.
Brushing wet hair can easily damage it...
- Not using conditioner: Many people skip conditioner to save time washing their hair. Conditioner helps replenish nutrients, moisturize hair, and keep it smooth and silky. Not using conditioner will make hair more prone to frizz.
- Using the wrong shampoo: Many people are quite easygoing and use any shampoo. However, each scalp type, hair quality, and hairstyle requires a suitable shampoo. Oily or dry scalp types need different shampoos. Damaged hair, natural hair, and hair treated with chemicals also require different shampoos.
Using just any shampoo can significantly affect the quality of your hair. Using the right shampoo will effectively clean your hair without stripping away its natural moisture or irritating the scalp.
2. How to wash your hair to prevent hair loss.
- Brushing your hair: To prevent hair loss, avoid brushing your hair when it's wet. Wet hair is very vulnerable to external forces. Therefore, you should brush your hair when it's dry, and brush it before washing.
If you want to brush wet hair, gently run your fingertips through the roots and slowly detangle, or you can use a wide-toothed comb to gently detangle your hair. Divide your hair into several sections and gently detangle from the mid-lengths down to the ends (about 7-10cm from the scalp).
After detangling this section of hair, continue brushing from the scalp downwards to reduce damage and breakage caused by strong pulling forces.
- Use only warm water to wash your hair: Avoid using cold or hot water to wash your hair in cold weather. Washing your hair with cold water can negatively affect your health, while using hot water will dry out your skin and hair; therefore, only use warm water. The ideal water temperature is equal to or 1-2 degrees Celsius higher than body temperature, i.e., water temperature between 37-38 degrees Celsius.
Warm water helps remove dirt and excess oil from the scalp easily, without damaging the hair. Rinse in the direction of the hair to avoid tangling and hair loss.
You shouldn't use heat to style your hair too often.
- Avoid washing your hair too often: In the summer, when the weather is hot and you sweat a lot, you can wash your hair 3 times a week, but the appropriate number of times to wash your hair in winter should be 2 times a week.
Dry weather often causes itchy scalps and more dandruff, but we need to avoid scratching vigorously to relieve the itch, because strong scratching can damage the scalp and hair. Specifically, it can cause abrasions, slowing down skin regeneration, and further irritate the scalp, leading to damage and hair loss.
Furthermore, you shouldn't shorten the time or steps of your hair washing routine just because it's cold. In winter, using conditioner is even more important to keep your hair smooth and tangle-free. While applying conditioner, combine it with scalp massage to stimulate circulation, remove any remaining small particles on the hair, and help clean the scalp more effectively. Afterwards, rinse thoroughly with warm water to remove any remaining shampoo and conditioner from your hair.
You should use a hair mask once a week to provide moisture and nutrients to your hair. You can use a hair mask from the same line as your shampoo and conditioner, or make your own hair mask from honey, coconut oil, etc. Hair masks help soften, moisturize, and increase shine in your hair.
- Dry your hair properly: Avoid using a high-temperature hairdryer to dry your hair quickly. Instead, use a clean, soft towel to gently pat your hair dry naturally, then use a hairdryer on a moderate temperature and with a moderate airflow speed.
After drying your hair, apply hair oil evenly to both hands, then gently run your fingers through your hair, lightly massaging it to allow the oil to penetrate each strand.
- Limit heat styling: Winter is also the season when women often style their hair, but styling with chemicals weakens hair strands. If we use high-temperature styling tools daily, it will make hair even more prone to damage. Therefore, you should limit straightening or styling your hair in winter.
