Close-up of 5 intersections in Ho Chi Minh City that will soon have overpasses built

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has proposed to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to prioritize the construction of overpasses at five intersections to alleviate traffic congestion. The total investment for this project is estimated at approximately 4,000 billion VND and will be implemented between now and 2030.

The proposed additional intersections include: the Dien Bien Phu – Ngo Gia Tu – Ly Thai To – Le Hong Phong seven-way intersection (District 3, District 10); the Nguyen Tri Phuong – Ngo Gia Tu – Nguyen Chi Thanh six-way intersection (District 5, District 10); the Nguyen Oanh – Phan Van Tri intersection (Go Vap District); and the National Highway 1 – Road No. 7 – Road No. 18 intersection (Binh Tan District). The total estimated investment for each project is 400 billion VND.

The intersections prioritized for overpass construction are traffic congestion hotspots that affect people's commutes. Investing in overpass construction not only helps reduce congestion but also improves traffic safety and contributes to the integrated development of the city's transportation infrastructure.

According to observations by a Dan Tri reporter, the Ly Thai To seven-way intersection, even outside of rush hour, is frequently congested with vehicles. This is also the intersection of many major roads, connecting traffic with Districts 1, 3, and 5.

The six-way intersection of Nguyen Tri Phuong and the seven-way intersection of Ly Thai To are two of the largest intersections in the inner city. Therefore, the overpasses to be built in these two areas will include branches crossing the intersections, helping to reduce the current number of intersections. The direction of the bridge branches will be carefully calculated during the specific project study phase.

The overpass project at the Four Communes intersection (Binh Tan District) has an investment of nearly 2,400 billion VND (land acquisition costing nearly 2,100 billion VND). This is the intersection with the largest total investment capital, with an overpass construction scale along the Le Van Quoi - Hoa Binh road direction, 280m long, 12m wide, and accommodating two-way traffic.

Since 2016, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council has approved the plan for an overpass at the Bon Xa intersection, but it has not been implemented due to a lack of funding.

The Four Communes Intersection is the junction of six roads: Binh Long, Thoai Ngoc Hau, Hoa Binh, Phan Anh, Huong Lo 2, and Le Van Quoi, and is on the list of 24 traffic congestion hotspots in Ho Chi Minh City.

"Coming to work in the morning is like torture. Normally, when the roads aren't crowded, it only takes me 15 minutes to get there. But on days when there's traffic, it takes me almost an hour. It would be so much better if there was an overpass here; I wouldn't have to worry about the congestion anymore," said Ms. Tran Kim Ngoc (28 years old, Binh Tan District).

In the northern gateway area, the intersection of Nguyen Oanh and Phan Van Tri is also one of the traffic congestion hotspots. The proposed overpass construction project, costing 400 billion VND, will be 500m long and have 2-4 lanes (for two-way traffic in the direction of Nguyen Oanh).

At the intersection of National Highway 1, Road No. 7, and Road No. 18, the city's transportation department plans to build an overpass or underpass with a length of 400m and a width of 2-4 lanes (for two-way traffic in the direction of Road No. 7 - Road No. 18).

The construction of overpass projects not only contributes to solving traffic congestion problems but also creates favorable conditions for the socio -economic development of the city in the future.
