During the process of investigating and monitoring wildlife using camera traps, the Management Board of Dong Chau - Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve (Quang Binh province) discovered a rare civet - a wild animal (also known as a ferret bear) in the forest.

Speaking to Dan Viet newspaper, Mr. Bach Thanh Hai - Director of the Management Board of Dong Chau - Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve (Quang Binh province), said: "The binturong was recorded by a camera trap while moving on the ground.

This is the first civet recorded in Dong Chau - Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve and in Quang Binh ever.

The newly discovered binturong has a body and fur similar to a bear, so it is often mistaken for a bear. The genus name Arctitis (bear - weasel) is a combination of arktos - bear and iktis - weasel, sometimes they are called weasel bears.

The body length of the Binturong ranges from 60 to 95 cm, and most of its fur is jet black except for the white muzzle. The fur of the Binturong is long, coarse and shaggy, and the tail is long, bushy, with a large base and tapering towards the tip.

A binturong was recorded by a camera trap while moving underground in the Dong Chau - Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve (Quang Binh province). Binturong, also known as the mink bear, is a wild animal listed in the World Red Book.

This is the first time an individual civet has been recorded in Quang Binh province.

The Binturong-Sable Bear is a nocturnal wild animal that sleeps on tree branches. The main food of this Red Book animal is fruit.

In addition, binturongs also eat animal eggs, plant sprouts, leaves and small animals such as rodents or birds. Binturongs can live over 20 years.

Binturongs used to be quite common in Vietnam, but now this wild animal only appears in the Central Highlands, Southeast, Lai Chau ...

This binturong species is listed as Vulnerable (VU) in the IUCN Red List. The binturong is listed as Endangered (EN) in the Vietnam Red Book of Animals.
