Close-up of AI camera system to monitor and control "reckless" traffic habits on the road
Although it has just been installed and operated on a pilot basis by the Traffic Police Department on a number of streets in Hanoi, the traffic surveillance camera system integrated with artificial intelligence (AI) has proven effective in detecting traffic violations with high accuracy regardless of weather conditions, day or night.

Recently, the Traffic Police Department has put into operation the Command Information Center with modern technology, combined with the application of artificial intelligence (AI), thereby fully meeting the requirements of state management in the field of traffic, including connecting vehicle registration data, inspection, tax, customs, health and data of other professional departments of the Ministry of Public Security related to people and vehicles. In terms of scale, the Command Information Center is a level 1 management center, which will be connected to 34 mini-centers in the provinces/cities in the future, including data from all professional equipment of the entire Traffic Police force. Data collected from cameras will be transmitted to the center, then the AI system will analyze to identify behavior and automatically transfer to the management file (folder). Colonel Pham Quang Huy, Deputy Director of the Traffic Police Department, discussed the AI surveillance camera system that has just been piloted. Currently, AI technology integrated into the camera system is capable of identifying more than 20 types of traffic violations, from common mistakes such as running red lights, driving in the wrong lane, using phones while driving, to more dangerous behaviors such as carrying weapons or speeding. Image and video data recorded by the system is immediately transferred to the Traffic Police Department's Command Information Center. After being compared with the vehicle registration database and population data, the violation notification will be sent directly to the vehicle owner via the application, ensuring a quick, transparent and convenient processing process. The Deputy Director of the Traffic Police Department gave an example of the effectiveness of the AI camera system in the case of a hit-and-run accident. The authorities will receive information identifying the vehicle and driver and immediately filter the data on all routes during the time frame of the incident. Thereby, the map of the suspected vehicle can be redrawn to serve the investigation and settlement of the accident. The AI-integrated traffic surveillance camera system was piloted and installed on Pham Van Bach Street (Cau Giay Ward, Hanoi ), starting to operate from 0:00 on September 24. Through data extraction from 2 AI cameras installed on Pham Van Bach Street (from 0:00 to 12:00 on September 24), the authorities detected a total of 1,798 violations. Of which, 343 cases involved motorcyclists not wearing helmets; 1,452 cases of non-compliance with traffic light signals (1,339 motorbikes ran red lights; 113 cars); 3 cases of motorbikes going in the opposite direction. Violation image recorded by camera on Pham Van Bach street. A new camera installed on the highway detected hundreds of violations, 97% of which were not wearing seat belts. In the coming time, the Traffic Police Department will coordinate with functional units and local police to install more than 5,000 more cameras on highways, national highways and urban areas.
