On the afternoon of May 25th and throughout May 26th, many people in Quang Tri province felt confused and uneasy after watching a video and seeing images circulating on social media showing a box of sticky rice with numerous maggots crawling around inside.

Based on the images circulating online, authorities immediately launched an investigation and discovered that the video showing maggots crawling in a box of sticky rice, as posted by a citizen, was indeed a real incident. The Facebook account that posted the content reported finding maggots in a box of sticky rice purchased from Hanh Phuc bakery in Nam Dong village, Con Tien commune, Quang Tri province.

Accordingly, at approximately 8:00 AM on May 25th, Ms. NTN, residing in Con Tien commune, went to Hanh Phuc bakery to buy 5 boxes of sticky rice at a price of 10,000 VND per box. This establishment is directly run by Ms. Tran Thi Thanh Huyen (born in 1982), currently residing in Nam Dong village, Con Tien commune.

After buying sticky rice, Ms. N and her siblings ate four boxes. The remaining box was for her brother. When they opened the box to eat, Ms. N and her brother discovered many maggots inside. Immediately, Ms. N took the box to Hanh Phuc bread shop to complain, and the owner accepted the box back and refunded the money.

Working with local authorities, Ms. Tran Thi Thanh Huyen stated that the maggots appeared in the food due to negligence in the processing and preservation of food, and a lack of thorough inspection before selling to customers.

Upon inspection and review of legal documents, this business establishment, while presenting a business registration license and personal health records, failed to produce a food safety certificate, only providing a commitment letter guaranteeing food safety.

Currently, the Con Tien Commune Police in Quang Tri Province are continuing to coordinate with relevant authorities to consolidate the case file and advise on handling the matter strictly in accordance with the law, in order to deter similar incidents and ensure consumer health.

Many people in Quang Tri province are feeling confused and uneasy after seeing maggots crawling in their breakfast sticky rice packages, because in recent days, many patients showing symptoms of food poisoning after buying bread for breakfast in Dong Hoi ward, Quang Tri province, are still being hospitalized for treatment.

On the morning of May 21st, many residents in Dong Hoi ward, Quang Tri province, went to buy bread for breakfast at Tien Thinh bread shop in Dong Hoi ward. This is a relatively busy bread shop every day. After eating, many people had to be hospitalized due to symptoms of food poisoning.

Nearly a week has passed, and Mr. DMH is still at the hospital because his three children showed signs of food poisoning after eating bread from the Tien Thinh store mentioned above. Mr. H said that on the morning of May 21st, his wife bought three loaves of bread for the three children. Shortly after eating, the children showed signs of vomiting and weakness, so the family took them to the hospital for emergency treatment. At the end of the year, the children's hospitalization meant they couldn't attend any school or class activities. Many students taking the entrance exam from 9th to 10th grade had to be hospitalized beforehand due to food poisoning, which significantly impacted their exams on the day of the exam.

Reportedly, authorities are currently working with the Tien Thinh bakery mentioned above. For the time being, the shop has been temporarily suspended and an investigation is underway to clarify the incident, as dozens of people suspected of food poisoning after eating bread from this shop are currently receiving treatment.

It is worth noting that prior to the two aforementioned food poisoning incidents, a mass food poisoning case involving breakfast meals had just occurred in Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri province, in early May 2026.

On May 1st, the emergency room at Huong Hoa Regional General Hospital in Quang Tri province was overwhelmed as it simultaneously received 64 patients exhibiting symptoms such as high fever, frequent loose stools, vomiting, cramping abdominal pain, fatigue, and signs of dehydration. The majority of patients were between 11 and 15 years old; the youngest patient was 50 months old and the oldest was 46 years old.

Local authorities immediately investigated and discovered that all the hospitalized patients had recently eaten bread purchased from a bakery in Tan Son village, Tan Lap commune, Quang Tri province. The patients were mostly students from Huong Loc Ethnic Boarding Primary and Secondary School, residing in Ra Ty, Pa Xia, and Cua villages, as well as some residents of Tan Son and Tan Tai villages in Tan Lap commune.

Immediately after the incident occurred, the Quang Tri Provincial CDC collected food samples, worked with the owner of the establishment, and requested a temporary suspension of operations for clarification. The Food Safety Department ( Ministry of Health ) also issued a document requesting the Quang Tri Department of Health to urgently implement measures to investigate and handle the suspected food poisoning incident. Subsequently, the Quang Tri Provincial CDC coordinated with the Pasteur Institute in Nha Trang to test the relevant samples.

Results of food samples related to the food poisoning incident in Huong Hoa, Quang Tri.

As of May 10th, test results from the Pasteur Institute in Nha Trang showed that in the samples related to the suspected food poisoning incident in Tan Lap commune, Quang Tri province, authorities detected Salmonella spp. bacteria in 7 patient samples and 4 food samples; and also detected Bacillus cereus in 4 food samples. Salmonella spp. is a dangerous group of intestinal bacteria, often found in unsanitary processed foods such as meat, eggs, milk, or food that has been left out for a long time. People infected with Salmonella bacteria usually show symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration a few hours to a few days after consuming contaminated food.

Prior to the food poisoning incident in Huong Hoa, a similar food poisoning incident occurred in Quang Tri province, resulting in 40 students from Kim Thuy Ethnic Boarding Primary School in Kim Ngan commune, Quang Tri province, being hospitalized after eating a school meal.

After a meal at school, 40 students from Kim Thuy Ethnic Boarding Primary School exhibited symptoms of vomiting and severe abdominal pain. Immediately upon discovering the incident, teachers and school medical staff provided care and first aid, but the symptoms worsened. Therefore, the school's administration reported the matter to the local authorities, who decided to take the students to the hospital for examination and treatment. The Kim Ngan Commune People's Committee mobilized vehicles from the commune to transport the students to the hospital.

Subsequently, the Quang Tri Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Pasteur Institute of Nha Trang detected Bacillus cereus bacteria producing NHE toxin in one sample of braised sea bass and in one student's sample.

In a short period of time, four food poisoning incidents occurred in Quang Tri province, mostly related to breakfast meals, and the majority of the victims were young children, which is alarming. It is known that during food safety inspections and enforcement, the police and market management forces in Quang Tri have also discovered, seized, and confiscated many large quantities of violating goods.

However, the fact that many people and food vendors, driven by profit, are trying to conceal frozen foods and smuggled goods that lack invoices, are expired, or do not meet quality standards is causing many difficulties for the relevant authorities.

To prevent food poisoning incidents, relevant sectors in Quang Tri province need close coordination to promptly address risk factors. A comprehensive approach involving multiple solutions is necessary, starting with strengthening the dissemination and education of food safety laws. Simultaneously, it is crucial to enhance knowledge and skills in ensuring food safety for a wide range of people, including managers, food producers and businesses, and consumers.

Furthermore, it is necessary to tighten state management, focusing on inspection and supervision of food safety. Increased unannounced inspections should be conducted when there are signs of violations or when state management requests are made. Violations of food safety regulations in food production, processing, and trading should be resolutely dealt with. The names of violating establishments should be publicly disclosed through mass media to warn the public against consuming food from these establishments.
