Hoan My Cuu Long Hospital recently successfully treated a female patient who was admitted with high fever, fatigue, difficulty swallowing, swelling and pain under the chin, and shortness of breath after receiving a fat-dissolving injection.
Ms. TN N (33 years old, residing in Hau Giang province) experienced swelling, pain, and a slight fever after undergoing a fat-dissolving injection at a spa. She self-medicated with painkillers and fever reducers at home, but her condition did not improve. The following morning, her neck and under-chin area became noticeably swollen and red, painful to the touch, and she experienced difficulty breathing. Her family then took her to the emergency room at Hoan My Cuu Long Hospital.
Upon examination, doctors noted soft tissue inflammation and swelling in both submandibular regions, with numerous needle marks under the skin, along with inflamed lymph nodes in the right submandibular and angled jaw. Blood tests revealed a high white blood cell count, clearly indicating infection. The patient was diagnosed with suspected submental cellulitis following fat-dissolving injection.
Doctors quickly implemented intensive medical treatment with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, painkillers, and closely monitored for signs of allergic reactions. After 3 days of inpatient treatment, Ms. N's condition improved significantly: the symptoms of fever and swelling had completely subsided, and the skin under her chin and neck regained its healthy pink color and was no longer swollen or inflamed.
Dr. Vo Hong Phuc, a specialist in plastic and cosmetic surgery at Hoan My Cuu Long Hospital, shared: “Currently, many people believe in fat-dissolving injections for weight loss without medical verification. However, fat-dissolving injections are not yet licensed for use in Vietnam by the Ministry of Health . These products can cause many dangerous complications such as swelling, infection, abscesses, tissue necrosis, or anaphylactic shock, threatening the lives of users.”
Dr. Phuc advises that for effective and safe fat reduction, people should prioritize regular exercise combined with a balanced diet. If cosmetic procedures are needed, they should be performed at licensed medical facilities or cosmetic clinics with qualified professionals and safe procedures.
