Tensions escalate: US and Iran exchange missile attacks in retaliation.

GD&TĐ - On June 3rd, RT reported that US and Iranian forces had just carried out a series of retaliatory missile attacks against each other.

The incident began after a US fighter jet fired a Hellfire missile at an Iranian-linked oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz on the evening of June 2, damaging the ship's engine room.

The U.S. said the M/T Lexie, flying the Botswana flag, was heading toward Kharg Island, violating the blockade unilaterally imposed by the U.S.

In response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted a ship believed to be linked to the US, named Panaya, with naval missiles.

Subsequently, U.S. forces apparently launched an attack on an IRGC telecommunications tower, which the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) later called "self-defense attacks on an Iranian military ground control post on Qeshm Island."

The IRGC continued to escalate tensions with a series of ballistic missile attacks on US air bases and helicopters in a regional country, as well as the "Fifth Fleet command center" in Bahrain.

The U.S. War Department stated that none of Iran's missiles hit their targets.

The Kuwaiti military confirmed it was responding to the missile and drone attacks, while Bahrain's Interior Ministry urged citizens to "remain calm."

Several videos circulating online allegedly show air defense activity on the night of June 2nd, with some interceptor aircraft appearing to veer off course and crash to the ground.

Two hours later, the U.S. military announced it had successfully intercepted an "additional Iranian UAV attack," and "ensured no U.S. personnel or property were harmed."

Both sides have largely refrained from retaliatory attacks since a fragile ceasefire was established in early April 2026, while negotiations remain deadlocked over Iran's nuclear program and the status of the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran restricted traffic through this crucial energy choke point following the US and Israeli attacks in February 2026, while the US imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports.

The IRGC warned that any violation of the ceasefire would come at a heavy price for the US military.

Meanwhile, CENTCOM stated that its forces "remain vigilant and ready to defend against any unprovoked aggression from Iran throughout the ceasefire."
