This is a warning issued by the Department of Information Security (Ministry of Information and Communications) on December 30, against the form of fraud via Facebook messages, using AI-based face-swapping.
The Information Security Department issued a warning about Facebook message scams using AI face-swapping technology.
According to the Information Security Department, on the morning of December 23, Ms. NTH, 45 years old, in Long Bien District (Hanoi) received a video call via Facebook messaging application from her son in Ho Chi Minh City asking to transfer more than 100 million VND to pay the registration fee for studying abroad. As a trained bank officer, Ms. H did not comply with this request.
The Department of Information Security said that the subjects often search for images and videos from social media accounts or other sources of the victims to create fake videos. Then, they use AI technology to combine faces and voices, creating fake video calls of relatives and friends. During the calls, the subjects give urgent reasons such as accidents, debts and request immediate money transfers to the accounts provided by them.
"When receiving a call, people should call back their relatives via a known phone number to check the information and not rush to transfer money as requested in a video call or social media message," the Information Security Department recommends.
Be vigilant, protect your assets and personal information, be careful when sharing personal information on social networks, limit posting personal photos, videos and sensitive information. Adjust your privacy to limit strangers from accessing your account. Be alert to strange accounts or unusual signs. If a relative or friend's account shows signs of being unsafe, notify them immediately and avoid interacting.
When encountering cases with signs of fraud, people need to promptly report to the police; at the same time, closely coordinate with authorities to prevent illegal acts.
Previously, the Information Security Department also warned about deepfake scam calls. Accordingly, with the naked eye, you can recognize signs such as the call time is often very short, only a few seconds. In particular, the face on the screen often lacks emotion and is quite "inert", the posture is unnatural, the skin color is unusual, the lighting is strange, making the video look unnatural... The sound is also inconsistent with the image, there is a lot of noise, or the clip has no sound.
