On January 24, Secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergei Shoigu, also a former Defense Minister, warned that the risk of armed conflict between nuclear powers is increasing.

TASS news agency quoted Mr. Shoigu as saying that the growing geopolitical competition between major powers on the international arena is increasing the risk of such a conflict.
In addition, he also accused the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) of increasing its activities near the eastern flanks of Russia and Belarus and conducting exercises in both offensive and defensive scenarios there.
According to the security official, the country's nuclear umbrella now includes Belarus and can be used in the same scenario framework as when Russia defends.
"According to the political decision we made, taking into account the request of Belarus, Russia's nuclear umbrella has now been extended to our closest ally and is applied within the same scenario framework allowing for a nuclear response in self-defense as with Russia," Shoigu explained.
The move includes "defence against an attack using weapons of mass destruction or an act of aggression using conventional weapons that poses a serious threat to the sovereignty or territorial integrity of the country," the Russian Security Council secretary added.
Following the meeting of the Supreme State Council of the Union State on December 6 last year, Minsk and Moscow approved a common security concept and signed a federal agreement on ensuring security within the Union.
"I would like to note that this concept includes eliminating the conditions leading to war and military conflicts, while minimizing the risks of using nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction," the senior Russian security official concluded.
