On the morning of May 25th, the Vietnam Information Security Association – Southern Chapter (VNISA) organized a thematic workshop on “Risk Warning and Prevention of Online Fraud” in Ho Chi Minh City.

Mr. Ngo Vi Dong, Vice President of VNISA Association and Chairman of the Southern Chapter, stated that recently, the digital transformation trend has been strongly underway with the goal of boosting productivity and efficiency throughout society. Accordingly, all activities in society are being digitized, data is being converged, and large data repositories are being formed. However, according to research by security experts, alongside the remarkable advancements in technology such as broadband internet infrastructure, IoT, Big Data, and AI, significant risks always come with them.

Cybersecurity experts are exchanging information at the workshop "Risk Warning and Prevention of Online Fraud".

Furthermore, geopolitical instability, supply chain disruptions, economic downturns, and global competition and hostility are also contributing factors to information insecurity and an increase in high-tech phishing attacks. It's evident that online scams are flourishing, and information is becoming increasingly distorted. Worryingly, the methods of fraud are becoming more sophisticated, making it difficult for users to anticipate and easily fall into traps.

Statistics from the Cybersecurity Department show that in the first nearly three months of 2023, the Department detected more than 3,200 fraudulent websites targeting Vietnamese users. Fraudsters used sophisticated methods to illegally collect people's personal information or impersonated financial institutions and banks to deceive and steal assets.

In response to this situation, VNISA has developed a robust information security action plan for 2023 with numerous activities for agencies, organizations, and businesses. Among these, the workshop "Risk Warning and Prevention of Online Fraud" is one of a series of activities aimed at providing the latest information on science and technology and practical experience in the field of information security.

The workshop attracted the participation of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Information and Communications (DIC), the Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention Department (PA05) of the Ho Chi Minh City Police, the Telecommunications Department of the Ministry of Information and Communications, and technology businesses to share and exchange opinions on the situation of fraud crimes, the sophisticated and dangerous methods used by fraudsters using high technology; and to share preventive measures and legal bases to prevent and suppress crime…

According to Mr. Vo Minh Thanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Information and Communications of Ho Chi Minh City, the most common online scams today are fraudulent calls via social media, which then hijack online accounts; or sending messages impersonating banks… Although many warnings have been sent out and most people are aware of them, many still fall victim to these scams because the fraudulent activities are so sophisticated and difficult to detect.
