Plant protection drugs (PPE) are indispensable materials in agricultural production, contributing to preventing pests and protecting crops. However, currently, most farmers in the province use PPE incorrectly, not following the recommended concentration and dosage. This not only wastes pesticides but also negatively impacts the ecological environment and the quality of agricultural products.

With the desire to quickly eradicate pests, most people often increase the dosage or mix many types of pesticides in the same sprayer without following the manufacturer's recommendations (illustrative photo). |
With 4 sao of rice fields, on average, each rice crop, Mrs. Luong Thi Ha's family, in Quyen hamlet, Phu Xuyen commune (Dai Tu), sprays pesticides 5-7 times before harvesting. Mrs. Ha shared: After finishing preparing the land, I spray herbicides before planting rice. One week after planting, I spray pesticides to kill golden apple snails. After that, depending on the stage of rice tillering, standing, flowering, greening... and being infected with different types of pests, such as leaf rollers, stem borers, brown planthoppers... we spray pesticides again. To be "sure", I often increase the dosage of pesticides and if I see that the rice plants are not cured, I will mix in many other types of pesticides.
Not only on rice plants, for other crops such as vegetables, flowers, fruit trees, etc., during the care process, if signs of pests are detected, farmers will spray to prevent and control them. It is worth mentioning that whether people comply with the quarantine period to ensure the quality of agricultural products or not is a concern for consumers.
In recent years, due to climate change, unusual weather conditions, and the fact that people have increased intensive farming and changed the structure of crop varieties, there have been some seasons where pests and diseases have been quite complicated.
In fact, when crops are affected by pests and diseases at low density, farmers can use manual measures or biological pesticides to prevent and protect the environment. However, with the mentality of wanting to quickly eliminate pests and diseases, most people often increase the dosage or mix many types of pesticides in the same sprayer without following the manufacturer's recommendations. This causes pests and diseases to break out strongly despite using pesticides many times.
In addition, farmers using pesticides without following the quarantine period also affects the quality of agricultural products and the health of consumers.
Thai Nguyen is a locality with advantages in agricultural production; the annual agricultural crop planting area of the whole province is more than 109 thousand hectares, of which rice is more than 67.7 thousand hectares, vegetables are more than 15 thousand hectares...
On average, farmers in the province use dozens of tons of various types of pesticides each year. To limit the abuse of pesticides, in recent years, the Department of Agriculture has coordinated with localities to organize many training courses and seminars on how to use pesticides properly for thousands of participants, following the "4 rights" principle: Right pesticide, right time, right concentration and right method.
Along with that, the functional sector also integrates propaganda and dissemination of legal regulations in the field of pesticide trading through specialized inspection and examination activities.
On average, each year, specialized units of the Agriculture sector conduct inspections of hundreds of agricultural material stores in the province, penalizing many establishments that violate regulations on trading in plant protection drugs.
Along with that, the authorities have forced the facilities to apply remedial measures, recall, return to the manufacturer or distributor, and destroy pesticides not on the list of pesticides allowed for use in Vietnam.
Improper use of pesticides leads to waste of materials, increased input costs, reduced effectiveness of pest control, and impacts on the environment and human health.
To limit the abuse of pesticides, in the long term, the province needs to have more policies to support and encourage people to produce safe agriculture according to VietGAP and organic processes; promote propaganda and encourage people to use biological pesticides and new generation pesticides to move towards safe and sustainable agriculture.
