The joy of a squid angler at sea

In the late afternoon, we slowly drove our motorbikes from Tuy Hoa about 10 km north to the sea of ​​An Chan commune (Tuy An district, Phu Yen). In addition to fishing gear, we brought along some instant noodles, warm clothes, raincoats and even some mugwort leaves (a type of traditional Vietnamese medicinal plant) for “good luck” and a good catch! As for cell phones, cameras… we had to wrap them in plastic and carefully wrap them in a hook to prevent salt from getting into the water.

The group parked their cars at several houses along the beach, rented a motorboat to transport passengers from the shore to the raft, and bought food and drinks at several shops along the beach... The prices were affordable and "served fishing enthusiasts" and were not at all " tourist services".

From Bac My Quang beach (An Chan), take a motorboat for about 20 minutes to reach the shrimp raft area clustered like a “raft street” in the middle of the ocean. Squid fishing gear is shockingly simple; just a fishing line and a… plastic shrimp (with a cluster of hooks at the tail) can “trick” and catch a bunch of squid in one session.

When it is still light, sitting on the raft, shaking your legs and fishing in the clear sea water, you can see the squids “thinking” that the bait is shrimp, coming close and raising their antennas… to bite! When they see something within reach, you pull, and then a “squid”, sometimes two “squids” are caught in the hook cluster! At night, you pull the line when you feel the “curly antennae” of the squids pulling at the “prey”! While fishing for squid, you can still chat and listen to music comfortably, without fear of disturbing the “opponent”.

After the pleasure of fishing, eating squid noodles right on the raft is truly… awesome! It’s just instant noodles cooked with squid. The raft is rocking in the middle of the night, this is the simplest dish. All the rafts have kitchens available. A squid the size of half a hand can “treat the heat” of a pack of noodles, if you are more “greedy” you can use 2-3 for a pack of noodles. Put the squid in a pot of boiling water for about 5 minutes until the squid is cooked, remove the instant noodles and put them in a bowl, scoop the water and squid in. And there you have a bowl of steaming hot squid noodles, slurping while still steaming…

The sweet, crispy, fragrant taste of the freshly caught squid, mixed with each sip of squid juice, noodles, chili slices, and vegetable stalks... is passionate and moving amidst the roaring waves of the ocean. If you have a bowl of squid noodles while you are hungry, you will only have to... have another bowl! It is so delicious, how can you not love the ocean?
