A bridge connecting cities

Established in 2000, the Association of Vietnamese Cities (the Association) has truly become a bridge connecting cities, contributing to promoting the sustainable development of member cities in various fields through capacity building activities, social critique, domestic and international cooperation, and technical consulting.

Representatives from cities in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand participated in the 4th Mekong River Urban Corridor Initiative Dialogue.

Dr. Ngo Trung Hai, Secretary General of the Association, shared that the Association is the large home of Vietnamese cities. It also serves as a bridge connecting with global urban governance organizations, the Union of Cities and local governments, and urban alliances… to build a sustainable urban system domestically and regionally. The Association represents Vietnamese cities in domestic and international relations and within the framework of non-governmental organizations.

In implementing the objectives of Resolution No. 06-NQ/TW of the Politburo on urban planning, construction, management, and sustainable development until 2030, with a vision to 2045, the Association focuses on expanding its network, connecting and coordinating activities to support member cities in strengthening their local governance capacity and urban management and development. Simultaneously, it promotes the role of social critique, strengthens urban linkages, and improves and enhances the quality of operations within urban clusters in a practical and effective manner.

To foster sustainable development, the Association has launched the "Green, Smart, and Sustainable Cities" emulation movement among all member cities. This movement, initiated by the Association in 2009, has been embraced annually by member cities, contributing to the creation of increasingly green, clean, beautiful, and civilized urban environments. Furthermore, issues related to green transportation, smart city development, and promoting digital transformation are shared among member cities at annual conferences. The current state of urban transportation infrastructure and the development of smart transportation systems linked to environmental protection and climate change adaptation are prominent concerns for all cities. Cities recognize that implementing smart transportation systems in the context of the 4.0 revolution is a new and challenging task, with success depending on many factors. However, cities are gradually adopting and applying digital technology in their leadership, administration, and management activities at the local level. As a result, the appearance of cities is becoming more modern, and the awareness of the people has undergone many positive changes.

In the context of a two-tiered local government system, and to align with the operational model, Dr. Ngo Trung Hai stated that maintaining and restructuring the Association is necessary. The Association will strengthen its activities to support and connect urban areas within the Mekong sub-region. Furthermore, it will continue to connect with countries along the Mekong River to form a network and system that can support each other in their existence and development for a prosperous Mekong.
