Josué Duverger could make history with the Haiti national team. |
According to Opta , if called up to the Haiti squad for the 2026 World Cup, Duverger will make history as the first player to participate in the biggest football festival on the planet while playing in the 5th division, a level considered semi-professional in many countries.
Duverger currently plays in the German 5th division (Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar) for Cosmos Koblenz. With Johnny Placide being the number 1 goalkeeper for the Haiti national team, Duverger has been trusted with a reserve position in the national team and has been constantly present in recent call-ups.
Born in 2000 in Montreal, Canada, Duverger is of Haitian descent and has represented Haiti on the national team. With six appearances for the team, the goalkeeper has made his mark, including his international debut in a 1-0 win over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the age of 17.
Despite playing at a lower level than the world's top goalkeepers, Duverger is a reserve player for a struggling Haiti team.
Haiti's qualification for the 2026 World Cup was a huge surprise. This is only the second time in history that a Caribbean team has participated in the biggest playground on the planet, the first time in 1974.
Haiti is currently engulfed in serious violence and instability. Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021, the capital Port-au-Prince has been virtually controlled by armed gangs. Even the head coach of the Haitian national team, Sebastien Migne, admitted that he could not live there because of the level of danger.
