Arsenal's championship win, after a 22-year wait, has sent the fan community into a frenzy of excitement. |
The celebratory atmosphere surrounding Arsenal's first Premier League title in 22 years was overshadowed by the tragedy that unfolded in Uganda.
According to Kampala police, an Arsenal fan named Denis died after an altercation with someone believed to be a Manchester United supporter.
The incident occurred on the evening of May 25th, just hours after Arsenal defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 to officially lift the Premier League trophy under Mikel Arteta.
In Uganda, where Arsenal has a large fan base, thousands of people poured into the streets to celebrate the Gunners' historic achievement.
According to police, Denis, 34, was watching the match at a public viewing spot in the Bakuli district of Kampala. After the game, he got into an argument with a man named Musiramu, identified as a Manchester United fan.
Kampala police spokesperson Rachel Kawala said the dispute quickly escalated into a fight. The suspect is accused of striking Denis on the head, causing the victim to fall to the ground and die at the scene.
"We are searching for the suspect and continuing our investigation into the incident," said Ms. Kawala.
Ugandan media reported that the incident further fueled concerns about football-related violence in the East African nation. The Premier League holds a particularly strong appeal in Uganda, where fans often gather in large numbers at public viewing venues to watch matches.
However, the rivalry between fans of big clubs like Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea has also led to unfortunate clashes in recent years.
On the day Arsenal ended their more than two-decade title drought, the tragedy in Kampala became a sad, dark side behind the frenzied celebrations of football.
