Nvidia CEO considers 'reviving' older graphics cards due to soaring GPU prices.

Is the RTX 5090 too expensive? Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is considering bringing back older graphics cards.

At the CES 2026 Consumer Electronics Show (currently taking place in the US), the gaming community and the tech industry are focusing their attention on Nvidia not only because of its new flagship products but also because of the ongoing price crisis. In response to a tricky question from Tom's Hardware about whether Nvidia plans to restart production of older GPU lines (using older, more abundant processes) to address the shortage and rising VRAM prices, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang gave a noteworthy answer.

Nvidia CEO considers easing price surge in GPU industry.

Instead of denying it, Jensen Huang gave an open-ended answer: "Yes, it's possible... and depending on the generation, we could also bring the latest generation of AI (artificial intelligence) technology to previous generation GPUs."

The Nvidia CEO acknowledged that this "requires considerable technical effort" but is entirely "within our capabilities." He pledged to seriously reconsider the matter.

Based on Jensen Huang's response, analysts believe Nvidia is considering two paths:

  • Reproducing old hardware : This is seen as a 'stopgap' solution to fill the gap in the low-end and mid-range segments, where the RTX 5000 series has either failed to reach or is being priced too high.
  • Widespread AI technology adoption (DLSS 4.5) : This is a more plausible scenario. Nvidia may be looking to bring advanced frame rate boosting features (like the recently released DLSS 4.5) to older graphics cards such as the RTX 3000 or even RTX 2000. In fact, DLSS 4.5 has already begun offering limited support for older models, and while performance might drop by around 20% compared to newer hardware, it's still a worthwhile boost.

Although Nvidia's CEO's response remains cautious and uncertain, it's a welcome sign that the company is aware of the pressure consumers are facing.

Currently, the price of the flagship RTX 5090 is sky-high (over $3,000), dragging down the price of the RTX 5080 and lower-end models. The explosion of AI has caused production costs and system RAM prices to skyrocket, putting gamers in a difficult position. If Nvidia can truly optimize the software so that older RTX 3000 or 4000 series cards can still handle new AI-powered games well, it would be an effective way to ease the current situation.
