In an interview with Bloomberg on May 28, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang shared his views on the strong growth of AI rivals from China, amid the US tightening technology export regulations. The manager said Chinese technology companies have begun to fill the gap, making the competition more fierce.
“Chinese competitors have grown strongly,” CEO Jensen Huang asserted, highlighting the rise of Huawei Technologies, a company blacklisted by the United States. After a period of heavy investment, the Chinese tech giant has made great progress in the field of AI technology.
However, the US export restrictions have had a profound impact on Nvidia, preventing the company from exporting components to the Chinese market. During the quarterly earnings call on May 28, CEO Jensen Huang spent much of his time urging the US government to ease export restrictions.
He said it was worrying that Chinese companies were looking for alternatives to their dependence on US suppliers.
“Like everyone else, they are doubling and quadrupling their capacity every year. Production volumes are also increasing significantly. This reflects the efforts of Chinese companies to catch up and surpass international competitors in the field of AI,” said CEO Jensen Huang.
The billionaire also warned that the gap between American products and Chinese alternatives is narrowing. For example, Huawei’s latest AI chip is comparable in performance to Nvidia’s H200, reflecting the rapid progress of Chinese rivals in producing AI chips.
Nvidia, on the other hand, is facing major difficulties. New US regulations have prevented the company from exporting its H20 chips to China. Mr. Huang said the company is looking into alternatives to the H20, but has no concrete plans and still needs approval from Washington.
“You cannot underestimate the importance of the Chinese market. It is home to the largest group of AI researchers in the world ,” Mr. Huang added.
