"Father of AI": Artificial Intelligence Will Teach Children Twice as Fast as Teachers

(Dan Tri) - Within the next 10 years, artificial intelligence (AI) teaching assistants will be able to teach children twice as fast as traditional teachers.

That is the prediction of British-Canadian computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton (77 years old), who is known as the “father of AI”. Mr. Hinton won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for his pioneering research in the field of AI.

Speaking at the Gitex Europe 2025 technology conference held in Berlin (Germany) recently, the professor specializing in computer science affirmed: "Currently, technology has not reached the level of wisdom to be able to truly become good teachers, but this will certainly happen soon in the future. At that time, education at many levels will be improved dramatically."

Mr. Hinton commented that AI tutors or teaching assistants will not only be more efficient but also know how to avoid being boring.

In the future, AI will be able to converse directly with students, adjust lesson content and delivery speed according to each student's ability, and continuously update teaching methods based on student feedback.

AI teaching assistants are already being trialled in some schools in the UK, particularly in maths and language arts classes.

One AI application that is being used a lot in schools in the UK is called Manda. The current fee to use Manda is around £10/month/student. Manda is trained from 550,000 minutes of recorded lectures from more than 300 teachers with pedagogical expertise and are teaching according to the UK national curriculum.

This AI tutor can automatically identify students' strengths and weaknesses, adjusting the order of lesson content accordingly.

At a private school in London, students have even taken classes without teachers. The school uses AI combined with virtual reality devices to help students learn.

“There are a lot of great teachers, but humans are fallible and it’s hard to maintain absolute consistency,” said John Dalton, principal of David Game College High School, which is using AI to replace human teachers in some subjects.

Maintaining a high level of accuracy, being able to personalize lessons to suit each student, and continuously assessing each student's learning process to make appropriate adjustments, as AI is doing, is indeed something that is very difficult to achieve with traditional teaching methods.

In the UK, teachers are increasingly relying on AI to reduce their workload, from planning lessons to grading and providing individual feedback to each student.

However, despite being a leader in AI research and development, Mr. Hinton has repeatedly warned about the risks in recent years. He predicts that AI could reach the level of "superintelligence", surpassing human intelligence in just the next two decades.

“We are creating highly intelligent entities, but we do not yet know how to make ourselves and these entities safe,” he warned.

Mr. Hinton emphasized that AI will bring the greatest benefits in the fields of medicine and education. In the field of medicine, AI will gradually have the ability to diagnose diseases with outstanding accuracy and find effective treatment methods. In the field of education, AI will become a powerful tutor to support learners.

“AI will eventually become a private tutor that helps children learn twice as fast as in regular classrooms, simply because AI understands what each student needs.

“AI will do things even better than we can imagine, because AI will continue to be trained from the learning experiences of millions of students. All of this will happen in the next 10 years,” said Mr. Hinton.
