The 22-year-old midfielder from Chelsea had a dream journey in the 2023-2024 season when he was loaned to Dortmund and contributed to bringing this team to the Champions League final.

Having played very impressively at Dortmund, when Ian Maatsen was absent from the preliminary list of the Netherlands team participating in Euro 2024, many people felt sorry for this young man.

Ian Maatsen has a great season with Dortmund

While relaxing with friends on a summer vacation in Mykonos after a season of hard work, on June 11, Ian Maatsen received an urgent call from the Dutch Football Federation, asking him to join the national team immediately.

After Frenkie de Jong, the Dutch team received more bad news when another midfielder, Teun Koopmeiners, suffered a serious injury during a training session preparing for the friendly match between the Netherlands and Iceland.

Immediately returning to the gathering point in Wolfsburg (Germany), Ian Maatsen was able to join the Netherlands team's training session on the evening of June 11, ready to wear the "Orange Storm" shirt for the first time at the major tournament Euro 2024.

Knowing that Ian Maatsen did not bring any personal belongings on his trip to Greece, Edward Maatsen drove three hours from their home in Vlaardingen (Netherlands) to Dortmund, the club's headquarters, to pack his son's shoes and some other personal belongings.

This journey has become familiar to his family over the past year as the whole family regularly travels to Germany to cheer for their son at Dortmund matches.

Mr. Edward Maatsen drove 6 hours to deliver shoes to his son to practice with the team.

He then drove another three hours from Dortmund to Wolfsburg, in time to hand over all the equipment so that Ian Maatsen could train with the Dutch national team.

"Ian originally planned to fly straight back to the Netherlands, but I advised him to go straight to the training point with the team, and his family would support him in everything else. As parents, we are proud of our son and are ready to do everything possible to help Ian develop in the right direction. Being with the team at this Euro is not only an honor for Ian but also a pride for the whole family," said Edward Maatsen.
