Ensuring health care
There are currently over 100,000 elderly people in the province, of which the disease rate among the elderly is quite high, from acute and chronic diseases to specific diseases and disorders.
According to medical experts, acute diseases in the elderly are mainly common diseases such as headaches, dizziness, coughs, joint pain, back pain. Common chronic diseases include diseases of the senses, cardiovascular system, bones and joints, endocrine - metabolism, digestion... Notably, diseases and disorders in the elderly such as diabetes, dyslipidemia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are on the rise.
Doctor Hoang Van An, Head of Thuong Nong Commune Health Station (Na Hang) examines the health of the elderly in the commune.
To ensure health care for the elderly, over the years, the Department of Population and Children and the Department of Health have coordinated to implement many practical programs and activities to improve the health of the elderly. Accordingly, the department has focused on disseminating information about health care for the elderly in the community; integrating population policy dissemination and care content into the activities of the elderly clubs in localities in the province through the population collaborator network.
According to the doctor's appointment, every month, Mrs. Tran Thi Hoan, 75 years old, goes to Vinh Loi Commune Health Station (Son Duong) for medical examination, consultation, and free medicine. Mrs. Hoan shared: "Elderly people often get sick. Every month I go to the doctor and get medicine. We are very happy that all levels and sectors care about the elderly like this. In addition to medical examination, the medical staff of the station also consults and guides in detail on preventive measures for common diseases in the elderly such as bones and joints, blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, etc., advises on diet, exercise, and reasonable rest, helping the elderly live happily and healthily."
Doctor Do Thi Thu Huong, Head of Vinh Loi Commune Health Station, said: “The station regularly guides the elderly on a suitable diet, encourages the habit of light exercise, and regular medication. For each specific case, we provide different instructions to suit the elderly’s medical condition.”
Many practical programs
Implementing the Elderly Health Care Project, from 2018 to present, health stations and health centers in districts and cities have proactively deployed specific action plans and programs to support the elderly. In particular, focusing on communication, guidance and medical care; coordinating with the local Elderly Association to deploy a program of periodic health check-ups for the elderly and supporting drugs to treat chronic diseases.
Doctor Hoang Van An, Head of Thuong Nong Commune Health Station (Na Hang) shared that in addition to monthly medical examinations and medication for the elderly, each year the station coordinates with the Commune Elderly Association to organize 2-3 medical examinations and medication sessions for the elderly, each session from 100-150 people. The Health Station also takes advantage of financial resources for health examinations for the elderly; encourages the elderly to come regularly to receive advice and create health records for monitoring.
The health sector has identified caring for the elderly as one of its important tasks. In recent times, many programs and activities to care for the elderly have been implemented. Taking care of health and creating a friendly environment for the elderly to live happily, healthily and usefully will create a driving force to contribute to the socio -economic development of the country.
The Ministry of Health and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Young Physicians Association have coordinated with other units to provide free medical examinations and medicine to hundreds of people in Tan Long Commune (Yen Son), of which the elderly account for over 70%. More than 70 doctors and medical staff with many years of experience, working at central and provincial hospitals, participated in the examinations and health consultations for the people.
Mr. Lam Dinh Nhang, 85 years old, Tan Long commune (Yen Son) said that at this age, he always feels pain and fatigue, but because of his old age, he is afraid to go far to the provincial hospital for a health check. Luckily, recently a group of doctors from the Central Government came to visit him, so he and many other elderly people in the commune were examined, and he felt very secure.
Elderly health care, in addition to the efforts of the health sector, requires the synchronous participation and investment of resources from relevant levels and sectors, from the family and society. Therefore, it is necessary to continue to strengthen the leadership and direction of Party committees and authorities at all levels and propaganda work on elderly health care; provide knowledge about common diseases for the elderly... Moreover, it is necessary to promote the work of reviewing, counting, and listing the elderly in the area to establish health monitoring and management records; fully meet the needs of medical examination and treatment of the elderly with increasingly high quality.
