Blocking smuggled goods at the border.

The long border and complex terrain make smuggling and the trafficking of prohibited goods unpredictable. Authorities are intensifying efforts to combat these activities and maintain border security.

The border, sea, and islands of An Giang province are key areas for security and order, with a complex network of rivers and canals, and many wide estuaries connecting to the open sea. This is also a place frequently exploited by smugglers to transport illegal goods from abroad into the country or vice versa. The smuggled goods mainly consist of drugs, money, gold, cigarettes, sugar, gasoline, and consumer goods… with high value and high profits, so smugglers always find ways to evade law enforcement.

Colonel Nguyen Hong Khiem, Deputy Commander of the Provincial Border Guard Command, stated: “Smugglers are becoming increasingly brazen, using high-speed vehicles and operating mainly at night or in bad weather conditions. They organize themselves into closed networks with clear assignments of tasks from transportation and surveillance to distribution; they constantly change their operating patterns, making detection and combating efforts by border guards much more difficult.”

In response to this situation, the Operations Department of the Provincial Border Guard Command advised the Party Committee and the Command to direct units to proactively monitor the situation related to the activities of various types of crimes in and outside the border; focusing on key areas. At the same time, they closely coordinated with other forces to intensify the fight against drug trafficking, smuggling, and illegal transportation of goods across the border and inland. Through these operations, many major cases were established and successfully prosecuted.

In 2024, the task force, in coordination with other units, successfully established and prosecuted Case AG1224.p, dismantling a ring involved in the illegal transportation of gold and foreign currency across the border; arresting one suspect and seizing 12 kg of gold. In 2025, through close monitoring of the area, the authorities continued to detect and arrest one suspect involved in the illegal transportation of currency across the border, seizing over 7.2 billion VND.

In early May 2026, operational teams under the Provincial Border Guard Command continued to implement comprehensive operational measures, arresting one individual transporting gold from across the border into Vietnam and seizing 1 kg of 24K gold. The units also seized tens of thousands of smuggled cigarette packs, thousands of liters of illegally transported gasoline and diesel fuel, along with numerous other goods, explosives, foreign liquor, and used electrical appliances.

Behind every successful operation lies the immense hardship and sacrifice of the soldiers in green uniforms. "To successfully combat a major case, a criminal investigation, or to intercept a smuggler crossing the border, officers and soldiers from various units must endure many sleepless nights at sea and brave the elements at the border. Amidst rough seas, strong winds, rainy nights, and harsh living conditions, the soldiers persevere, remaining steadfast and never leaving their positions," Colonel Nguyen Hong Khiem shared.

There were nights when patrol boats had to turn off all their signal lights, silently monitoring targets from a distance to avoid detection. On numerous occasions, due to bad weather, the vessels of the authorities faced danger at sea at night. Nevertheless, with a high sense of responsibility, the officers and soldiers encouraged each other to overcome difficulties, continue to stay in their assigned areas, and resolutely prevent suspects from exploiting loopholes to dispose of evidence and cause losses to the State.

In addition to focusing on combating and handling violations, the Border Guard force of the province also emphasizes building a solid all-people border defense posture. Regular propaganda and mobilization efforts are carried out among the people in border areas, helping them raise awareness and strictly abide by the law, preventing them from participating in or assisting in smuggling and illegal transportation of goods across the border.

In the coming period, the Provincial Border Guard Command will continue to thoroughly understand and strictly implement the directives of the Prime Minister, the National Steering Committee 389, the Ministry of National Defense , and the Border Guard Command on strengthening crime prevention and combating violations of the law; especially combating and preventing the illegal transportation of gold and currency across the border area. Units will continue to closely monitor the situation in their respective areas and target groups; and implement comprehensive and in-depth operational work, especially basic investigations in key areas.
