He worked for Oxalis, a well-known brand specializing in adventure tourism programs that attract a large number of domestic and international tourists. In 2010, when Son Doong Cave was announced as the world's largest cave, Duong began working as a porter (carrying equipment for research teams and filmmakers).
The young man, born in the 1990s, realized he had a love for nature, especially the majestic landscapes of his hometown, but due to the need to earn a living, he had to leave home to work. However, fragments of memories of the mountains and forests, and his passion for exploring beautiful caves, still lingered in Duong's mind. In 2015, upon hearing that Oxalis was hiring, he immediately returned to join the company.
Nearly three years of studying at Saigon Tourism College have equipped Thai Duong (left) with valuable skills, leading to positive changes in his work and life.
Driven by his passion for the profession, Duong gradually made progress in his work. However, he knew he could make a deeper impact if he had more knowledge. Fortunately, luck smiled upon him and 11 porters and safety assistants from the cave exploration tours, who were given the opportunity by the company to study at Saigon Tourism College.
Investing in the knowledge and skills of local people is a sustainable way to develop tourism, not only in Quang Binh but also in the journey of enhancing the image of Vietnamese tourism.
Due to a long break from schoolwork, Duong faced considerable difficulties in absorbing the material in the early days of his studies. However, he didn't give up. His teachers were patient and dedicated; his classmates were young, dynamic, and enthusiastic, which further inspired him to learn. His company and family encouraged and supported him. "I was fortunate to receive so much support, so I never considered giving up," Duong recounted. Three years of hard work and dedication paid off. Recently, Duong and 11 colleagues officially graduated.

Duong said emotionally, "From being a porter to holding an international tour guide certificate, it has been a meaningful journey for me." Professional knowledge, skills, and a spirit of service have become a solid foundation, giving him even more confidence when accompanying tourists from all over the world. According to him, it's never too late to learn and understand the profession more deeply. "Besides passion and experience, proper training helps each person do better and contribute more value to their homeland," Duong emphasized.
