Vietnam is one of the countries with a large number of international students worldwide , especially in English-speaking countries such as the US, UK, and Australia. However, the number of foreign students coming to Vietnam is still quite modest.
Going against the flow, Romanian-born British student Mihaica Cezar - Alexandru (also known as Alex) chose Vietnam as the destination for his studies.
Fate with Vietnam
Sharing about the opportunity to come to Vietnam, Alexandru said: "I am a person who loves to travel . When the international office of Staffordshire University (UK) announced the exchange program in Vietnam, I quickly seized this opportunity."
Alexandru studied at the international office of the British University Vietnam (BUV). Here, he had the opportunity to visit many different lands. The most memorable were the trip to experience local culture in Mai Chau, visit the orphanage in Hanoi , and SOS Children's Village Hai Phong.
Over time, Alex became familiar and attached to life in Vietnam. The foreign guy "could not imagine" a time when he would leave Vietnam to return to the UK.
Like many foreigners who “fall in love” with Vietnam, Alex is most passionate about the cuisine as well as the way cultural heritage is preserved in Vietnam. The warmth of the people is also what makes Alex feel welcome.
Although there were some cultural barriers, Alex quickly adapted because for him, these differences also made the cultural experience more interesting and memorable.
The decision to stay in Vietnam was not difficult for Alex as he received support from both his family and BUV. Living independently since childhood when leaving his family for the UK, Alex was used to traveling far from home. Alex's family was happy to see their son's maturity and good adaptability.
Regarding the school that made Alex decide to move to Vietnam to study, he shared: “The thing I was most worried about was finding financial support for the next school year. I feel very lucky to be selected for a scholarship by Mr. Christopher Jeffery - BUV's Senior Executive Director of Strategy & International Partnerships. Thanks to that, I was able to continue with BUV's study program in Vietnam."
Journey of growing up in Vietnam
Daring to change and adapt to a new environment is already a remarkable effort. For Alex, success came to him even more than that when after only a short time studying at BUV, he reaped the “sweet fruits” for himself.
Alex enthusiastically shared about what he had accomplished and especially mentioned the Personal Development Program (PSG), a subject that helped him to really see his own changes in many aspects of life.
“During my last exchange program, I saw a lot of changes in myself. I finished my first book, “Placebo: The Way of Life,” in 3 months and hope to publish it soon. On the personal development side, I noticed a clear improvement in my emotional intelligence (EQ) - an important skill in the work environment in particular and life in general,” the young man said.
Having a connection with Vietnam means that Alex also sees many opportunities for himself here. Studying economics, Alex wants to become an entrepreneur in the future. The British student believes that business opportunities are everywhere, and as a global citizen, Alex can start a business anywhere, especially in Vietnam - the country known as the "rising tiger" of Asia.
Alex's sharing not only opens up the personal stories of a British student who traveled more than 10,000km to Hanoi, but also partly changes the public's view of the quality of education in Vietnam when the curriculum of international universities in the country is assessed to be no less than that of foreign universities.
“The teachers at BUV are experienced and know how to bring the best values to students, promoting the development of each individual learner. This is something I really appreciate because a quality study program is always something I care about,” Alex affirmed.
In Alex’s eyes, the “upstream” or “downstream” story of studying abroad has never been a concern. Just like business opportunities, opportunities to pursue quality study programs are everywhere, not just in the UK.
“I especially love a quote by Neale Donald Walsch: ‘Life begins at the end of your comfort zone’. For students considering studying abroad, I hope you can step out of your comfort zone and you will definitely never regret it,” Alexandru affirmed.
