away from home
On Tet 2022, Roberto Valdes Pedroso (32 years old, Havana, Cuba) came to Ho Chi Minh City to find a new job and challenge. Roberto never expected that he would find more than that in this country.
Roberto shared that before that, he was a general practitioner in Cuba. However, he always wanted to find new challenges in many different countries. Roberto came to Vietnam to learn about the country with a warm climate and friendly people.

Arriving in Ho Chi Minh City, Roberto lived with a friend in District 12. Right from the first days of arriving at his new home, Roberto felt the friendliness and warmth of the people around him.
Despite the difference in skin color and language, no one discriminated against or shunned him. On the contrary, when they learned that Roberto was from Cuba, the neighbors, even though they were meeting him for the first time, smiled, shook hands, and even invited him to sit at the same table.
That friendliness helped Roberto confidently explore Ho Chi Minh City and realize that this place is a “ culinary paradise”. He was attracted by the street food, entertainment areas with many thrilling games… things he had never seen in his hometown.

One time, while wandering on the street, Roberto met a girl named Thanh Huyen (34 years old, District 12, Ho Chi Minh City). Roberto asked for directions and was immediately surprised by Huyen's enthusiasm and friendliness.
On the contrary, Thanh Huyen also had a special impression of the handsome and gallant Cuban guy. The two talked and felt strangely compatible.
Huyen shared: “The more we talked, the more we understood each other. I found Roberto to be straightforward and to the point. He also values friendship very much.
As a doctor, he lives a very healthy life. He doesn't smoke or use stimulants.
I am straightforward, and when I feel impressed with someone, I will open my heart to get to know them, even conquer them. After a period of knowing and understanding each other, we realized that we really had feelings and loved each other.

Happy
Thanh Huyen will always remember the day her heart was conquered by a Cuban guy. That was the time Huyen was hospitalized and had to undergo surgery that lasted many hours.
During Huyen's surgery, Roberto was restless. He was worried and waited for 7 hours at the door of the hospital room.
“As a doctor, he knew how long the surgery would take. But for some reason, after the surgery, I slept for hours.
When he saw me awake, he smiled happily like a child. At that moment, I was very happy, knowing I had chosen the right person," Thanh Huyen confided.
As a restaurant manager, Huyen helped Roberto find a job in Thao Dien ward, Thu Duc city, Ho Chi Minh city. Here, Huyen instructed Roberto on how to serve such as walking, carrying food, smiling and chatting with customers...
The job was different from his major, Roberto patiently studied and mastered it after a few days of being guided by his girlfriend. At work, he was loved by friends and customers, who gave him friendly hugs and handshakes.

In early October, the couple opened a banh mi coc stall on the sidewalk in Go Vap district. Every morning, Huyen makes the filling and special sauce according to her own recipe.
The two set up their sandwich stand at a crossroads to serve students and morning commuters. When customers came to buy, Roberto would cut the bread, put in the filling and greens inside, and then reheat it.
The bread has a unique flavor and the seller is a Cuban guy who always keeps a smile on his face, attracting many customers. After about 3 hours of selling bread, both of them returned home to rest and then went to Thu Duc City to work in the restaurant.
After finding a job and love in the “beautiful, safe country”, Roberto intended to settle down in Vietnam. He connected and introduced Thanh Huyen to her parents in Cuba.
Meanwhile, in Vietnam, Roberto also spends time with his girlfriend's family. Whenever he has the chance, he visits and takes care of Thanh Huyen's mother.
Recently, Roberto and Thanh Huyen have registered their marriage. The couple plans to hold their wedding party at the end of this year.
“We are satisfied with our current life and are happy with what we have. Here, I receive things that I have never experienced anywhere else,” Roberto said.
