BHG - With the willpower and determination to escape poverty, Mr. Chang Van Pao (born in 1986), a member of the Farmers' Association of Phuong Thien commune, Ha Giang city, boldly started a business with a model of raising native black pigs, growing off-season vegetables and producing Shan Tuyet tea, earning an income of over 150 million VND/year. Through his economic development model, the Dao ethnic people of Cao Banh village have also learned and followed, and more and more examples of farmers overcoming difficulties to become truly rich appear on their homeland.
Born and raised in a farming family in the middle of the vast mountains of Cao Bành, Phuong Thien commune, Chang Van Pao soon realized the way out of poverty for a better life. Words go hand in hand with actions, he took advantage of the available advantages on his homeland to start a business. In recent years, thanks to the orientation of promoting livestock development towards commodities, he has invested in barns to raise native black pigs for breeding and commercial pigs. From the initial breeding pigs, up to now, his family's black pig herd has increased by dozens, each year selling 2 litters to the market, bringing in an average income of over 70 million VND/year.

Based on his experience in raising pigs, Mr. Pao said: “The native black pig breed adapts well to natural conditions. For safe and effective raising, the barn must be clean, airy, and regularly disinfected. Pig feed is cooked from corn, bananas, and beans, so the meat is delicious and the price is higher than the price of normal pork. Since the locality has developed tourism, commercial black pigs have expanded their consumption outlets and are processed into a variety of products, bringing higher economic efficiency to farmers.”
Located at an altitude of more than 1,000 m above sea level, Cao Bành village is blessed with nature, very suitable for the growth and development of Shan Tuyết tea trees. Like many households in the village, Mr. Pao's family grows, cares for and processes tea using a mini tea roaster. Maintaining the traditional way of making tea, his family's Shan Tuyết tea products are fragrant, rich in flavor, and are known by many people. Thanks to the income from tea trees reaching over 40 million VND, he also has more conditions to expand production, raise livestock and build solid houses.
With the virtue of diligence, hard work, and perseverance, Mr. Pao is a pioneer in growing off-season vegetables on terraced fields, an area of about 2,000 m2. At the end of October, when the weather is cold, the vegetables such as cabbage, kohlrabi, tomatoes, and cucumbers planted early are ready for harvest. On another plot of land, he is experimenting with growing cantaloupe and watermelon. Visiting the lush green vegetable beds, Mr. Pao shared: “Growing vegetables not only helps improve daily life, but also has vegetables to sell to increase family income. Last crop, I sold 20 million VND worth of vegetables. If the experimental planting is successful, from the next crop, I will build a greenhouse to grow vegetables and fruits all year round.”
Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Phuong Thien Commune, Nguyen Duc Quang, said: “Farmer member Chang Van Pao is an active person, dares to think, dares to do, has the will and determination to rise up. Through visiting and learning from the experiences of other farmers, he has boldly applied new models to livestock and crop farming, developing the family economy. In addition to the main sources of income from raising native black pigs, producing tea, and growing vegetables, he also has income from raising chickens, growing cardamom, and growing cinnamon. In addition to supporting part of the cost of new plant varieties, the Farmers' Association is promoting propaganda work, encouraging Mr. Pao to expand the area of safe vegetable cultivation while maintaining existing livestock models, adding motivation to farmers in the highlands of Cao Banh in the journey to realize the goal of sustainable poverty reduction”.
