Apple has just released iOS 18.2 for iPhone, bringing a long-awaited feature: ChatGPT integrated with Siri.
ChatGPT will appear when users ask complex questions to Siri. When Siri receives a question that Apple's software determines is more appropriate for ChatGPT, it will ask the user's permission to use OpenAI's service.
The iPhone maker says it built privacy protections into the feature and that OpenAI doesn't store requests. The model the company uses is called GPT-4o.
Apple users do not need an OpenAI account to use ChatGPT, but can pay for an upgraded version of ChatGPT through Apple.
The release of iOS 18.2 marks a major milestone for Apple, which is banking on Apple Intelligence to drive demand for the iPhone 16. Apple Intelligence is a suite of AI features announced in June.
Apple rolled out parts of Apple Intelligence in October, including a writing tool for proofreading, paragraph rewriting, a new design for Siri, and notification summaries.
Next year, there will be another update that brings even bigger improvements to Siri, including the ability to perform actions inside apps.
Many investors believe that Apple Intelligence's new features will help increase iPhone sales, spur upgrade cycles and strengthen the position of the "bitten apple".
The integration with Siri is also a big win for OpenAI, putting its most important product in the hands of millions of iPhone users. Apple and OpenAI did not disclose the financial terms of the deal.
Users need iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 16 to install and use Apple Intelligence. To update to iOS 18.2, readers go to Settings > General > Software Update.
You are then taken to the Apple Intelligence setup page.
iOS 18.2 also adds a few features like the Playground photo creation tool, Image Wand to remove objects or objects in photos.
