A fire at a food market in Zhangjiakou city (Hebei province, China) on January 4th killed at least eight people and injured 15 others.
Xinhua News Agency reported that the fire broke out at a market in Zhangjiakou at around 8:40 a.m. local time on January 4th, and was brought under control more than an hour later.
Images from the scene show flames engulfing the market, producing thick smoke. Firefighters quickly arrived to extinguish the blaze. Search and rescue operations were completed by midday. The injured were treated at the hospital and their condition is not life-threatening.

Local officials have offered condolences to the victims' families and prioritized support for those affected by the accident. According to Reuters, the market had been open since 2011 and specialized in selling vegetables and other everyday consumer goods.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Channel NewsAsia reports that the source of the fire may have been a gas cylinder, charcoal, or cigarette butt.
Last month, China recorded a major explosion that caused a fire at a luxury apartment complex in Nanshan District, Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province on December 11, 2024.
