"Race" to learn more English, even primary school children are practicing for IELTS

Báo Dân ViệtBáo Dân Việt25/10/2024

In recent years, Vietnamese parents have been racing to have their children prepare for the IELTS exam. Some families spend up to 100 million VND per year hoping their children can "speak like the wind" and have the opportunity to enter university.

In particular, the age of IELTS preparation is not only for students before entering university or college but also for primary school students. The situation of students taking IELTS orientation courses, pre-IELTS courses, IELTS preparation courses and IELTS certification exams is becoming more and more popular.

Travel 100km to take your child to school

Having a child in grade 12, Ms. Nguyen Thi Linh (Thuong Tin, Hanoi ) said that she is quite anxious about her child's English learning situation. Although her child has studied for the Hanoi University of Science and Technology's competency assessment exam, she still wants her child to study for the IELTS certificate in the hope of opening up more opportunities in university admission next year.

Ms. Linh said that since the beginning of this year, she and her child have been interested in IELTS test preparation classes and centers. There are many test preparation centers near their home, but the tuition for a course is about 40-50 million VND for just a few months, so her family did not choose one because it was difficult to afford the tuition. After much hesitation, the family chose an online class with a lower tuition fee.

“After groping around and reading reviews of each center for a whole week, my son and I finally decided to study at a center located near the National Economics University with a tuition fee of 16 million VND/6 months. If we register for the course within that month, it will be reduced to more than 14 million VND. The center guarantees that our child will get a GPA of 7.5,” Linh shared.

This parent shared that it is true that at this time, English teaching centers in general and IELTS test preparation centers in particular are springing up like mushrooms after the rain with many forms, many options and also many different tuition fees, making parents feel like they are lost in a maze.

Mr. Nguyen Van Duong (Bac Giang) said that for the past 4 years, he and his wife have diligently taken their child nearly 100km to study English 2 sessions at a center in Dong Da district, Hanoi.

Mr. Duong shared that when he first brought his child to Hanoi to learn English, he was only in grades 2 and 4. At this point, his child has entered an academic English class that guarantees IELTS: "The reason my parents and I traveled 100 km to Hanoi to study is because we want our child to study with qualified teachers and a good curriculum. Since we're already investing, let's find a way to invest early to be effective" - this parent shared.

Therefore, in addition to the 60 million VND tuition fee invested in two children, the couple divided their work and money to persistently send their children to school: "If we count the cost of gas as well as the time and effort spent quitting their jobs, the investment in English alone in a year is up to 100 million VND" - Mr. Duong said.

Why?

In fact, in recent years, every family has sent their children to study English, especially IELTS. Many parents follow the crowd mentality, causing unnecessary pressure on their children. In fact, not only do they study in one place, but many parents force their children to study in 2-3 places for peace of mind.

There are many reasons for this situation, such as a series of universities changing their admission methods using international certificates, including IELTS certificates. IELTS was first used as one of the university admission criteria in 2017 by top economic schools. By 2018, schools in the fields of engineering and medicine also gave priority or combined admission to candidates with IELTS certificates. However, at that time, IELTS was not yet very popular.

In particular, in recent years, IELTS has received more attention because it helps students improve their chances of being admitted to university. Combined IELTS admission forms account for about 5-20% of the total admission quota of each school. That is why many Vietnamese students have begun to learn more about this certificate and consider it as a trump card to find more "bright doors" to enter university.

Mr. Dao Tuan Dat, principal of a high school in Hanoi, said that in recent years, many 12th grade students at the school have studied and taken the IELTS exam. In some years, 70-80% of a class even took the exam to get this certificate.

On the other hand, many students take the entrance exam to technical schools, but to be "sure", they do not hesitate to ask their parents to spend 100 million to study for the IELTS certificate when the time to apply is only a few months.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai (Hoan Kiem, Hanoi) said that she had just completed a course for her child with a teacher at an English center and a 1-1 tutor at home with a tuition fee of millions of VND/session: "It's true that my child did not intend to study from the beginning, so he only had a few months to prepare, so the test result yesterday was only 6.5. Although he did not meet the requirements to be admitted to advanced majors at universities, he said he wanted to invest, so his family tried to spend more than 100 million VND for him to study" - Ms. Hoai said.
