Despite missing many key players, Chelsea still proved to be superior to the rest of the Conference League. A 4-1 away win gives coach Enzo Maresca and his team the chance to make history.
The Blues could become the first Premier League side to complete a collection of every current UEFA trophy, including the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League and European Super Cup.
Sancho has a great chance to win the title with Chelsea. |
Despite playing away from home, Chelsea dominated the first half. The Blues took the lead through Marcus Danielsson's own goal after Jadon Sancho's shot in the 13th minute. Noni Madueke then missed a great chance when facing goalkeeper Jacob Rinne, but he made amends with a cool left-footed shot to double the lead just before the break.
After the break, Djurgardens came out strong, creating a number of notable chances. August Priske had a dangerous long-range shot, and goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen had to make an excellent save.
However, the home side's hopes were quickly dashed when Chelsea brought on Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer. The change immediately paid off as Jackson scored twice in six minutes, between 59 and 65, including a close-range tap-in and a low shot from the edge of the box, to put the visitors 4-0 up.
Isak Alemayehu pulled a consolation goal back for the Swedish side with a precise header, but Chelsea held on to their three-goal lead until the end of the match.
The victory continues Chelsea's impressive away form in Europe, with just one defeat in their last 15 away games. The return leg at Stamford Bridge is now almost a formality, with the Blues already having a huge advantage.
