Just an apology is all that's needed.

VTC NewsVTC News09/07/2023

On the afternoon of July 9th, in an interview with VTC News, Ms. H.D, the mother of the MC, said that the family is currently still in the US and has not dared to return to Vietnam yet, even though they had booked tickets to return at the end of June.

From passing to failing.

Ms. H.D added that after her daughter's article was published, it attracted a large number of interested readers.

"Actually, the person who suggested that MC participate in the competition was Mr. T. He suggested it when MC was in the middle of 8th grade. At the end of 8th grade, I asked him again and Mr. T. agreed. In May 2022, MC started studying for the competition, but only music because she had studied composition," Ms. H.D said.

In March, when the results came out, Mr. T. only called Ms. H.D. to inform her that MC had passed the music project. When asked about the writing project, Mr. T. replied that MC had failed.

The following day, when checking the list published on the competition website, Ms. H.D. took a screenshot and sent it to Mr. T.

" When I asked why the list included registration number 2190, the project title was the same as MC's, and the name was also CL (MC's surname is L. - PV), Mr. T. replied that it was a paper by a student from Vinschool. At that time, I immediately knew there was a problem, but I thought about the dozen or so students who were taking the exam; if I made a big fuss about it at that time, perhaps none of them would be able to participate ," Ms. H.D confided.

Ms. H.D recounted that MC's music teacher had asked her to write a paragraph in Vietnamese and send it to him so he could guide her in composing her competition entry. MC also sent a copy to Teacher T.

Regarding the reason for sending the essay to Mr. T. despite it being unrelated, Ms. H.D explained that it was Mr. T. who suggested that the MC write about the topic of Ho Chi Minh City's green spaces gradually disappearing.

However, when Mr. T. received the essay, he suggested that the MC expand the Vietnamese essay into English for the writing project competition.

Just an apology is all that's needed.

Ms. H.D. asserted that her family had received absolutely no prior notification from the teacher regarding the substitution of the QU card for the MC's registration number. It wasn't until June 13th, when the entire group arrived in the US, that the teacher informed Ms. H.D.'s family that he had only discovered the substitution upon arrival.

The Genius Olympiad is an international competition aimed at promoting awareness of environmental issues through projects in Science , Creative Writing, Business, Robotics, Art, Music, and Short Film.

The competition was organized by the Rochester Institute of Technology (USA).

"Not only was he silent with my mother, but he didn't even reply to my messages. I had no idea what was going on until I went to America to prepare for the exam ," the MC said.

The MC further shared that, during the awards ceremony, even though she won the silver medal, the results were awarded from the bottom up. Seeing QU go up to receive the award, the MC felt very sad.

According to the MC's account, the situation dragged on even though the MC and her family only hoped to receive an apology from Teacher T. and the QU family. However, they never received one.

"I asked my mother for permission to post it on Facebook. She stopped me from the moment I had the idea, but I was determined to do it anyway. I wrote the entire post myself with the help of someone named Jenny Hoang on Facebook, who also supported me throughout the recent Genius Olympiad," the MC recounted.

Ms. H.D stated that, in reality, her family only needed an apology from teacher T. and the QU family. More than half a month has passed, and everything remains unresolved.

"Up until now, with the situation becoming so serious, I feel very sorry for MC and QU. However, if QU's family has truly filed a legal document and wants to sue, our family is ready to follow suit," said Ms. H.D.

Previously, in an interview with VTC News, Mr. T stated that both creative essays by MC and QU shared the title "Saigon - Facing the loss of myself," addressing the issue of Ho Chi Minh City gradually losing its urban green spaces. Because both MC and QU were mentored by Mr. T, he suggested the topic and title of their essays. However, the content of their work was completely different.

" When the incident occurred, I tried to explain it to the MC and her mother, but things have gone too far. Whether right or wrong, I would like to apologize to both families, especially the MC and QU. I hope both families will remain calm and avoid escalating the situation, which could negatively impact the students' mental well-being, and especially Gia Dinh High School. Currently, I am waiting for the MC and her family to return to the country so we can meet and discuss the matter in more detail ," Mr. T. said.

Regarding this incident, Ms. TV (Qu's mother) stated that after the competition ended, her daughter posted the picture on her personal Facebook account, but the MC's family pressured her to remove it.

Asserting that the information online is one-sided and seriously affects her child's health and mental well-being, Ms. TV stated that she has documented all related posts, messages, comments, etc., to protect her child's reputation.

Speaking to VTC News, Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Khanh Van, Principal of Gia Dinh High School (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City), confirmed that she was aware of the incident right after the competition ended on June 17th.

" After the competition ended, MC won the silver medal for the music project, and QU won the bronze medal for the writing project. However, immediately afterward, MC's parents kept calling and putting pressure on me, constantly demanding that I resolve this matter immediately. Because Mr. T is a teacher at the school and QU is also a student at the school, I told MC's parents that I would wait until the students had all returned to their home country before inviting all three parties (MC, QU, and teacher NMT) to a meeting ," Ms. Van said.

The principal added that as soon as the controversy occurred, the school requested Mr. NMT to provide a report on the incident.

VTC News will continue to report on this case.
