10th grade admission next year in Ho Chi Minh City: Some places consider admission, the rest take literature, math, and foreign language exams

On the morning of July 16, the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training informed about the 10th grade enrollment in 2026.

"The 10th grade admission for the 2026-2027 school year is expected to combine both admission and entrance exams," Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, deputy director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, informed Tuoi Tre Online on the morning of July 16.

According to Mr. Quoc: "We will submit to the Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City the 10th grade enrollment plan for the 2026-2027 school year as follows:

Admission to grade 10 of public high schools in some special areas. Public high schools in the remaining areas will enroll grade 10 students by taking an entrance exam in 3 subjects: literature, math, and foreign language. This is to maintain stability and create convenience for parents, students, and schools after the merger of Binh Duong, Ba Ria - Vung Tau , and Ho Chi Minh City.

It is known that before the merger, all three provinces of Binh Duong , Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Ho Chi Minh City chose literature, math and foreign language as the three subjects for the entrance exam to public grade 10.

2025 is the first year that Ho Chi Minh City and provinces and cities across the country will enroll 10th graders according to the new regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training (Circular 30). In particular, the Ministry of Education stipulates that there are 3 methods of enrolling students into 10th grade of high school: entrance exam, admission review or a combination of entrance exam and admission review. The selection of the admission method is under the authority of the locality.

For the entrance exam method to grade 10 of high school, localities will conduct 3 exams, specifically math, literature and a third exam or subject selected by the Department of Education and Training.

The Ministry of Education also stipulates: The third exam subject is selected from among the subjects assessed by scores in the general education program at the secondary level, ensuring that the same third exam subject is not selected for more than 3 consecutive years; The third exam is a combination exam of a number of subjects selected from among the subjects assessed by scores in the general education program at the secondary level.

Thus, if the above proposal is approved by the Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, 2026 will be the second year that Ho Chi Minh City chooses a foreign language as the third exam subject.

Announcing the early 10th grade enrollment plan

On July 10, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training Nguyen Van Hieu requested the General Education Department to preside over and coordinate with the Quality Management Department to advise on the 10th grade enrollment plan for the 2026-2027 school year.

"The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will soon officially announce the 10th grade enrollment plan so that students and teachers know and can orient their teaching and learning," said Mr. Hieu.
