Literacy classes organized by the Bac Ninh Disabled Group are held regularly 4 evenings/week. |
People with disabilities come to the class with different types of disabilities, ages, and circumstances, so their perception is also different. Some people have intellectual disabilities, have never been to class, and it takes several weeks to understand and remember the letters, while others have physical disabilities that make reading and spelling very difficult. Therefore, volunteers who teach literacy must be very patient, instructing little by little, and most importantly, creating closeness, listening, sharing, and empathy so that learners do not feel pressured...
Ms. Do Thi Hue shared: “When I opened this class, I was also worried about whether the students could learn or not. Luckily, thanks to the guidance and experience exchange from the teachers of Tu Son Special Education Center, most of the students have made progress. My goal and the volunteers' goal is to help them recognize letters, read, and eventually be able to use computers to support their daily lives.”
With more than 60 members who are disabled, mainly in Tu Son ward, the group regularly gathers to share joys and sorrows, visit each other when sick, help each other work and be independent in life. With the support of organizations, unions and benefactors, the group actively organizes activities to help disabled people raise awareness, understand their rights and, more importantly, equip them with skills to remove barriers of inferiority and integrate into the community.
Some outstanding activities that the group has carried out since the beginning of the year include: Participating in the digital literacy class for people with disabilities; cultural and sports exchanges to celebrate Vietnam Day for People with Disabilities (April 18); cooking charity meals for leprosy patients and the elderly at the Provincial Dermatology Hospital; visiting and giving gifts to people with disabilities at the Provincial Mental Health Hospital; organizing the "Happy Mid-Autumn Festival" program for children of people with disabilities; visiting and giving gifts to people with disabilities in difficult circumstances....
Ms. Nguyen Thi Su, a group member, said: “After the initial shyness and hesitation, we all enthusiastically participated, and were happy to have our own playgrounds and contribute to social activities. That is also a way for us to gradually overcome our self-consciousness and affirm the value that people with disabilities can bring to the community.”
