Four evenings a week, the small house of Ms. Do Thi Hue, Head of the Disability Group in Bac Ninh (Rich Gao area, Tu Son ward), resounds with the sounds of disabled people spelling out words as they participate in literacy classes.

The literacy class organized by the Bac Ninh Disability Group is held regularly four evenings a week.

The disabled students attending the literacy class come from diverse backgrounds, ages, and circumstances, resulting in varying levels of understanding. Some have intellectual disabilities and have never been to school before, requiring weeks to understand and recognize the alphabet. Others face significant difficulties with reading and spelling due to physical impairments. Therefore, the volunteer teachers must be extremely patient, providing detailed instruction, and most importantly, fostering a close relationship, listening, sharing, and empathizing to help learners avoid feeling pressured.

Ms. Do Thi Hue shared: “When I opened this class, I was worried about whether the children would be able to learn. Fortunately, with guidance and experience sharing from teachers at the Tu Son Special Education Center, most of the children have made progress. My goal and that of the volunteers is to help them recognize letters, learn to read, and eventually be able to use computers to assist in their daily lives.”

With over 60 members who are people with disabilities, mainly residing in Tu Son ward, the group regularly gathers to share joys and sorrows, visit each other during illness, and help each other with work and self-reliance. With the support of organizations, associations, and benefactors, the group actively organizes activities to help people with disabilities raise awareness, understand their rights, and, more importantly, equip them with the skills to overcome self-doubt and integrate into the community.

Some notable activities the group has carried out since the beginning of the year include: participating in literacy classes for people with disabilities; cultural and sports exchanges to commemorate Vietnam's Disabled Persons Day (April 18); cooking charitable meals for leprosy patients and the elderly at the Provincial Dermatology Hospital; visiting and giving gifts to people with disabilities at the Provincial Mental Health Hospital; organizing the "Happy Mid-Autumn Festival" program for children of people with disabilities; visiting and giving gifts to disadvantaged people with disabilities, etc.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Su, a member of the group, said: “After the initial shyness and hesitation, we all enthusiastically participated, and were happy to have our own playgrounds and to contribute to social activities. It's also a way for us to gradually overcome our inferiority complex and affirm the value that people with disabilities can bring to the community.”
