Is the 'perfect' iPhone about to appear?

Steve Jobs' vision of a perfect iPhone will finally come true in the 20th anniversary edition.

The history of the iPhone is a long and eventful one, marked by considerable ridicule from competitors. However, it has also created one of the most recognizable smartphone brands in the world today.

Based on various sources, PhoneArena writer Abdullah Asim believes that the iPhone is finally close to achieving the vision that co-founder Steve Jobs had envisioned since 2007.

An iPhone model "almost entirely made of glass, curved, and with a notch-less display" could be unveiled in late 2027. In a Bloomberg Power On report, analyst Mark Gurman stated that this device would mark the 10th anniversary of the iPhone X, the product that started the trend of thin-bezel iPhones.

This aligns with Jobs' original vision of a portless phone, eliminating both the ports and the screen bezels. The Apple co-founder envisioned the first iPhone as a smartphone without buttons or ports.

Both of those features have been gradually reduced on modern smartphones, and their complete removal is now achievable. If this design is true, the 20th anniversary iPhone would usher in a new era for Apple smartphones.

At that time, the phone would only be able to charge wirelessly, support only wireless audio devices, and have a perfect screen without any notches or "notches." PhoneArena even cited rumors that Apple would apply better battery technology to this phone.

Furthermore, according to PhoneArena , the supply chain has been working on a type of display with bezels pushed to the sides so that the screen appears bezel-less from the front. Additionally, Apple is also working to bring under-display camera technology to this particular iPhone, leaving the screen area almost perfectly flawless.

For users who demand a truly immersive entertainment display and dislike the "notch" or "punch-hole" design, this is a dream come true. In fact, the REDMAGIC 10 Pro, launched in December 2024, has already achieved this with its large, notch-free screen, 144Hz refresh rate, and loud speakers.

However, if Apple does the same, it's highly likely that this will become the new standard that other phone manufacturers will have to catch up with.

Abdullah Asim argues that it would be a lie to say things would go smoothly. To put it more mildly, Apple has been consistently disappointing in 2024.

Besides numerous poor software updates, the company has had major trouble with Apple Intelligence. For almost a year since announcing Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024, the corporation has promoted nearly every new product in the same way: “This product runs Apple Intelligence.”

iPhone 16 advertisements focus more on Apple Intelligence than the phone itself, even though this feature won't be available when the iPhone 16 goes on sale.

However, the reality is that Apple's AI currently only consists of a few writing tools and a weak message summarizing feature. The feature users truly expect is a significantly improved Siri that can understand and accurately fulfill requests, and even use apps for you. It's still nowhere to be seen.

Yet for months on end, users were forced to watch advertisements for non-existent features, buy devices that didn't work as promised, and were misled into believing that a hardware upgrade was a revolution.

If this situation continues, it's understandable that users won't place much faith in a revolutionary iPhone for at least the next two years.

Furthermore, another major issue is that Apple hasn't had much success with its new projects. Besides the aforementioned Apple Intelligence, the company's self-driving car project has been canceled.

Apple's foray into the home robotics field with a smart home hub and a robot iPad is also being delayed due to AI issues. Ultimately, the Apple Vision Pro remains a poor-selling product, a bad sign for the company's first augmented reality device.

However, in reality, Apple has overcome many challenges under CEO Tim Cook's leadership. When the iPhone was threatened by large-screen smartphones (phablets) 10 years ago, Apple responded by increasing the iPhone's size and succeeded.

Around the same time, Apple settled a dispute with the FBI over unlocking the shooter's iPhone. More recently, the company overcame supply chain difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, continuing to ship and distribute products smoothly.

"There is still hope to see Apple launch a perfect iPhone in two years' time, and perhaps even trigger a second renaissance for the smartphone industry," Abdullah Asim commented.
