The 'perfect' iPhone is coming?

Steve Jobs' vision of the perfect iPhone will finally come true in the 20th anniversary edition.

The history of the iPhone is a long and tumultuous one, with plenty of ridicule from competitors. However, it has also created one of the most recognizable smartphone brands in the world today.

Compiling from sources, PhoneArena writer Abdullah Asim believes that the iPhone is finally about to reach the vision that co-founder Steve Jobs has cherished since 2007.

A beautiful block of glass

An iPhone model that is “mostly made of glass, curved and has a notch-free display” could be released by the end of 2027. In a Power On article on Bloomberg, analyst Mark Gurman said the device would mark the 10th anniversary of the iPhone X, which started the trend of thin-bezel iPhones.

This aligns with Jobs’ original vision of a portless phone, which also eliminated the bezels. The Apple co-founder envisioned the first iPhone as a smartphone without buttons or ports.

Both of those things have been slowly reduced on modern smartphones, and their complete removal is within reach. If this design is true, the 20th anniversary iPhone will usher in a new era for Apple smartphones.

At that time, the device will only be able to charge wirelessly, support only wireless audio devices and have a perfect screen without any notches or "rabbit ears". PhoneArena even cited rumors that Apple will apply better battery technology to this phone.

Additionally, according to PhoneArena , the supply chain has been working on a display with bezels pushed to the sides to make the screen appear borderless from the front. Additionally, Apple is also working on bringing under-display camera technology to this particular iPhone, leaving the screen almost flawless.

For users who demand a full entertainment screen and hate the trend of "rabbit ears" or "hole-punch", this is a dream come true. In fact, the REDMAGIC 10 Pro launched in December 2024 has achieved this with a large, flawless screen, 144 Hz refresh rate and loud speakers.

However, if Apple does the same, it will likely become the new standard for other phone manufacturers to catch up with.

Feasibility

Abdullah Asim said it would be a lie to say that everything was going smoothly. To put it mildly, Apple in 2024 has been a consistent disappointment.

In addition to a series of bad software updates, the company has had a major problem with Apple Intelligence. In the nearly year since announcing Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024, the company has promoted nearly every new product in the same way: “This product runs Apple Intelligence.”

The iPhone 16 ad focuses more on Apple Intelligence than the phone itself, even though the feature won't be available until the iPhone 16 goes on sale.

But the reality is that Apple’s AI is currently just a few writing tools and a weak message summarization feature. What users really want is a powerful Siri that can understand and execute requests accurately, even use apps on your behalf. It’s not here yet.

Yet for months, users were exposed to ads for features that didn't exist, bought devices that didn't perform as promised, and were led to believe that a hardware upgrade was revolutionary.

If this situation continues, it would be understandable if users did not put much faith in a revolutionary iPhone for at least the next 2 years.

Another big problem is that Apple hasn’t had much success with new projects. In addition to the Apple Intelligence mentioned above, the company’s self-driving car project has been canceled.

Apple’s foray into home robotics with a smart home hub and iPad robot has also been delayed due to AI issues. Finally, the Apple Vision Pro remains a poor seller, which doesn’t bode well for the company’s first augmented reality device.

However, in reality, Apple has overcome difficulties many times under the reign of CEO Tim Cook. When the iPhone was threatened by large-screen smartphones (phablets) 10 years ago, Apple responded by increasing the size of the iPhone and succeeded.

At the same time, Apple settled its dispute with the FBI over unlocking the shooter’s iPhone. More recently, the company has weathered supply chain challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and continued to ship and distribute products smoothly.

"The hope is still there, to see Apple launch a perfect iPhone in two years and maybe even be the trigger for a second renaissance for the smartphone industry," Abdullah Asim commented.
