GD&TĐ - A US federal court has just ruled in favor of Harvard University in its lawsuit against the Trump administration regarding the freezing of research funding.

This decision will restore the $2.2 billion that was blocked and reaffirm Harvard University's academic freedom.

In a Boston court hearing, Judge Allison Burroughs ruled that the Trump administration had used anti-Semitism allegations as a pretext to cut off funding. She argued that this violated the First Amendment and jeopardized Harvard's decades-long legacy of scientific research. In addition to reopening funding, the court issued a permanent injunction preventing the government from blocking future Harvard funding.

The ruling immediately sparked controversy. White House spokeswoman Liz Huston announced an appeal. Meanwhile, Harvard President Alan Garber hailed it as an affirmation of academic freedom and pledged to continue monitoring the legal process.

The lawsuit garnered widespread support within the education community. The American Council on Education, along with 28 other organizations, filed a document supporting Harvard, emphasizing the crucial role of university research in economic development and workforce training.

Despite winning in court, observers believe the funding may not be disbursed immediately, as the case is likely to drag on to the Supreme Court. However, with this ruling, Harvard has sent a message that universities have the right to defend academic freedom against political pressure.
