According to a source close to Variety , Lucasfilm is currently developing a new Star Wars trilogy with Kinberg attached to write and produce alongside studio chief Kathleen Kennedy.
Simon Kinberg is a logical choice for the new installment of the Star Wars franchise as he has worked on many spin-off films from the franchise.
This suggests that the franchise will begin a new series with new characters after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker . Although plot details have not been revealed, Lucasfilm has denied that the trilogy will continue the story that George Lucas started with A New Hope in 1977.
Thus, in the coming years, Disney will have 2 "super products" released. That is The Mandalorian & Grogu - the sequel to the series revolving around the bounty hunter played by Pedro Pascal (expected to be released in 2026) and immediately after that will be 3 Star Wars movies in 2026 and 2027.
Lucasfilm also has a number of other Star Wars projects in the works (from filmmakers like James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover) but it's unclear which of these will be the first to hit the big screen.
In addition, projects with Rian Johnson - the man behind the famous Knives Out series or the duo David Benioff and DB Weiss of Game of Thrones were also considered. However, it seems that Lucasfilm and the names have not found a common voice, causing the projects to be frozen indefinitely.
Kinberg is best known for writing and producing several X-Men films including The Last Stand (2006), First Class (2011), Days of Future Past (2014) as well as the first two Deadpool films and Logan. (2017).
He previously worked with Lucasfilm on the Emmy-nominated animated series Star Wars: Rebels , which aired for four seasons from 2014 to 2018. He also assisted in the Star Wars reboot following Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm, serving as a consultant on the series The Force Awakens, which premiered in 2015
Sources stress that Kinberg's trilogy is still in the early stages of development and it's unclear when it will enter production.
