Chieng Sung leverages its agricultural strengths.

Chiềng Sung commune was established by merging Chiềng Sung and Chiềng Chăn communes. With its relatively flat natural area and abundant water resources, it is well-suited for organizing agricultural production in a concentrated manner, with appropriate crop planning. Exploiting the potential and strengths of the locality, Chiềng Sung focuses on building and replicating economic models, increasing people's income, and creating momentum to fulfill the income criteria in the new rural development program.

Based on the conditions of each area, the commune directs the lowland villages to focus on producing commercial crops such as: seed corn, vegetables, strawberries, fruit trees, and sugarcane for factories; while the highland villages expand the model of growing bamboo shoots, coffee, developing specialty livestock farming, forestry, and medicinal plants.

This season, Chieng Sung is lush and green, with hills covered in fruit trees, corn seedlings, and passion fruit vines, showcasing the diversification of crops and the emergence of many effective economic models. For example, the family of Mr. Dang Van Hoa in Tan Lap village has over 3 hectares planted with longan and plum trees, and over 1 hectare of corn seedlings, sweet corn, and commercial corn. Mr. Hoa shared: "My family invested in a drip irrigation system and applied scientific methods to production, focusing on organic farming. From this integrated economic model, my family earns over 300 million VND annually."

The production mindset of farmers in Chiềng Sung commune has changed positively, towards linking production and product consumption. Currently, the commune has one company and five cooperatives operating in the fields of agriculture , agricultural product processing, construction, transportation, etc., effectively promoting production linkages, product consumption, and creating livelihoods for local people.

A prime example is the Trung Hieu Organic Cooperative in Cang village, Chieng Sung commune, whose main business is the consumption of agricultural products. Since 2018, the cooperative has partnered with 370 households in the area to cultivate over 300 hectares of sweet corn. Mr. Hoang Quoc Viet, Director of the cooperative, said: The cooperative collaborates with the local authorities to send technical staff to train farmers on proper corn production and care procedures; and organizes the signing of product consumption contracts with partner households. Each year, the cooperative purchases 5,000 tons of sweet corn, supplying it to processing plants in Hai Phong .

Sharing his thoughts on unlocking potential and creating breakthroughs in economic development, Mr. Nguyen Khac Hao, Chairman of the People's Committee of Chieng Sung commune, said: The commune effectively utilizes capital from national target programs to build economic models; promotes intensive farming and applies science and technology to production. Linking production with consumption, the commune encourages households to form cooperatives. At the same time, it selects key products to build brands and participate in the OCOP program; and strengthens the promotion and introduction of distinctive agricultural products.

Since implementing the two-tiered local government system, Chiềng Sung commune has established a working group to study the experience of growing bamboo shoots in Lào Cai province; and worked with several businesses to survey coffee cultivation in the commune. It has directed specialized agencies to organize 8 training courses on agricultural and livestock techniques, with over 3,000 participants. In coordination with Sơn La Coffee Processing Company and Sông Lam Tây Bắc Fertilizer Company, it has trained 170 farmers on sustainable coffee cultivation, care, and fertilization techniques during the basic development phase. Regarding livestock, the commune has promoted, encouraged, and guided people in the highland villages to implement models of raising striped pigs, wild boar hybrids, and native black chickens.

With diligence and creativity in labor and production, farmers in Chieng Sung are effectively exploiting the potential and advantages of the locality to build an efficient economic model, promoting sustainable poverty reduction. Currently, the people have converted more than 1,088 hectares to planting fruit trees such as passion fruit, red-fleshed dragon fruit, mango, longan, avocado, etc., in linkage with Chieng Sung Agricultural Joint Stock Company for seed and technical support, maintaining the cultivation of over 6,000 hectares of corn and vegetables. They are also cooperating with Son La Sugar Cane Joint Stock Company to plant 718 hectares of sugarcane; and building a production chain linking 40 hectares of red-fleshed dragon fruit with Ngoc Hoang Cooperative in Ta Hoc commune. Total agricultural output reaches 17,000 tons/year; by 2025, average income is expected to reach 45 million VND/person/year, and the poverty rate will be reduced to approximately 6.5%.

The integrated economic development model of the people of Chieng Sung.

By 2030, Chiềng Sung commune aims to achieve the new rural standard, striving for an average income of 50 million VND per person per year and reducing the poverty rate by 2-3% annually. The commune prioritizes criteria related to production development to increase people's income, integrating production support programs for ethnic minority communities with the new rural development program. This includes developing livestock farming towards commercial production; converting inefficient hillside land to fruit tree and coffee cultivation; guiding the listing of products on e-commerce platforms; encouraging the creation of fan pages; and utilizing AI for online promotion and sales, promoting local agricultural products to both domestic and export markets.

The breakthrough in economic development in Chieng Sung is the result of the proactive and astute efforts of the Party committee and government, along with the diligence and creativity of the people. Using income as a driving force has helped the locality solve the problem of sustainable poverty reduction, creating a solid foundation for achieving the new rural standard by 2030. When Chieng Sung's distinctive agricultural products reach larger markets, the picture of the new rural area will be complete, bringing prosperity to the people.
